How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is that l am now using solar to light my house which is very convenient to my family and of a great help to my children when they are studying as compared to before when they were using tin lump. Solar has also become like a source of income because I use it to charge phones for people and get money for my up keep, which was not the case before. The better part of it is that I no longer spend money to buy parrafin which was very costly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion Give directly did very well by training people before starting the program, at least they created awareness of what they were doing. They also did well by dealing with people directly and not forcing people to get into the program. I did not see what Give directly did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent most of the transfer to buy solar system for lighting my house because I have been admiring houses with electricity and solar, being that I could afford to connect electricity I decided to buy solar. So when I got the money I spent most of the transfer to buy solar system for lighting my house. This has enabled my children carryout their studies with ease compared to when they were using tin lump which was affecting their eyes and they were also experiencing frequent flue because of the smoke from the tin lump.It was also very expensive to buy paraffin each and every time. The tin lump had so many challenges making it inconvenient because sometimes it run out of parrafin while they were still studying. I was also tired of buying parrafin every now and then. The remaining balance I spent on farming where by I bought manure and seeds that I use to plant on my farm since by doing this I am very sure of getting better produce which will be enough to sustain my family for so long without spending money to buy maize from the market.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference is that I live in a more stable cement plastered wall house with nice and comfortable sofas. My house is well lighted at night thanks to the solar system. This was a dream that I had waited for so long. Initially, all this was the exact opposite. My house was almost falling down because of the weak mud walls and I had no sofas. At night I had to use candles for lighting.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had been dreaming of getting some amount of money to repair my house but this was just a dream given that I am an orphan life was unfair I could tell myself that. Receiving such an amount from GD was a dream come true just like in the fairy tales. I felt blessed and favored like God had answered my long awaited prayer.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I had started to get worried because of the heavy rains. My house was leaning on one side one could think it's falling down the next minute. When I received my transfer, I repaired my house by building cemented walls to prevent the heavy rains from bringing it down. I also bought sofa seats so that my visitors can get a comfortable place to sit on whenever they visit. The remaining amount I installed a solar system to help light my house at night.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to improve my house, buy bedding and use the remaining transfer in farming. For a very longtime I worked hard to build my house but the kind of soil we used for the walls is very lose and may fall easily that is why I will buy sand and cement with the transfer to improve the house. We have been sleeping on old rags spread on the bed, I will now be able to buy a mattress and blankets for our use. The remaining balance from the transfer I will use in farming because we have a piece of land where I shall plant maize that upon harvest we shall use for food and sell the surplus for other family needs like buying clothes and medical needs of the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is usually in the afternoon while I have taken a break from the difficult work of weeding or cane cutting under very hot sun. It is at this time that after shower I relax and help my wife with baby sitting.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced have been my child sickness. Most of the time my little baby falls sick, I think sleeping on old rags could be the reason for her frequent illness. I have to spend most of the money I get from the casual employment in taking her to the hospital always leaving us with money to buy clothes of even proper food.
