Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The whole family was home when we heard the SMS ring alert. My husband and I can not read so it was up to our son to read the text for us. We were so happy after he let us know GD had sent the transfer just like they had promised. The first thing that came to mind was buying a plot of land, paying for my child's school fees and buying a solar lighting system for my house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
We live on a really small uncomfortble piece of land and I had always wanted to buy a land big enough to have a house constructed and carry out the farming activities I want to start. I am so thankful to GD for changing my family's life and allowing me to start doing my projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The first emergency for our family was getting some land. I bought a piece of worth 200 $, paid 30 $ at my child's school, and paid health insurance worth 12 $. With the rest of the money, I was able to have solar energy at my place and bought other necessary utensils including bed sheets, a mattress, and a bed cover. I did not have enough land where I am right now; I am using the land I bought to grow crops for the moment but I plan on relocating as soon as possible.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Even though we are old but we need to live in a nice place. We will rebuild our house, using cement and new roof on $350. We will buy pigs of $200. We sleep in a place which is not clean, we hope to buy matress and bed sheets of $50 and kitchen materials of $50. We will pay school fees of our child of $30 per year. We will save $30 in the saving group.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We were very happy that we ended the last year in good health. Although we are very poor, we managed to raise our children in harmony. We are glad that one of our sons is building his own house and hopefully soon, he will get married. So as parents, when see that other children are developing themselves, we are always grateful for that.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is that we live in poverty. We do not have where we get money as we are very old, we cannot go to do casual jobs. It is not easy to get the school fees of our child, getting health insurance is also hard for us and as old people, we are always sick. Getting food too is a challenge due to seasons, we did not get harvest which is enough to feed the family.
