How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I have been able to build a house, it is my desire to buy a dairy cow since buying milk has been my routine and it is expensive. I am planning to start saving part of my income towards this and I believe that with time, I will be able to raise enough money to even buy a heifer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did very well by helping everyone unconditionally, especially during such economic times. This greatly changed the living standards among community members. There was no biasness as everything was so transparent in terms of how people were enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I built a bigger house using my first transfer and after doing so, I came to the reality that my sitting room was empty since I did not have any furniture. Upon receiving my second transfer, I decided to spend KES 9000 on three three-seater seats, a cupboard at KES 14000 and used the remaining amount on food. I am an electrician and getting this kind of work nowadays is very hard. Because of this, I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me to achieve all that I have done using the transfer within a short time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9am while tending my garden when I heard an SMS alert on my phone. On checking, I confirmed that I had received the eagerly awaited KES27500 from GiveDirectly. I was very excited and straight away went to purchase construction materials for my poultry house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is venturing into poultry farming. This because from the eggs layed I get a daily income to feed my family. Through the transfers, I also have adequate food which can sustain my family for a longer time this wasn't possible before because as a casual electrician my job would prove unreliable at times.

I spent KES5000 on building a poultry house in order to venture into poultry keeping. I spent KES 2500 on 11 chicken layers as an income source for my family. I spent KES7000 on two sheep because thrive and multiply fast hence good for financial emergencies.I spent the rest on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always wanted to own a poultry project. Starting point is to establish a poultry unit. My plan is to rear at least 150 chickens. Their production of eggs will boost my disposable income and sustain my young family because I will be able to sell their products and earn income. I have preferred this kind of venture simply because it is easy to start and does not require alot of space. I have been keeping poultry albeit on a small scale , getting this money therefore means I will scale up the project. I have come up with a budget of USD 7500 that covers on building the poultry house ,buying chicken,food and medicine. The rest of the money will go towards purchasing of furnitures and buy clothing for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Iam a casual labourer doing electrical installations around my locality . My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I have received my wages. Casual jobs are paid daily by the end of the day .It makes me happy since I will have gotten money to buy household items for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I schooled up to technical level college. I did an artisan course in Electrical engineering. My ambition was to further my studies but because of lack of enough school fees I didn't continue. I have been passionate about engineering and my wish was to study it up to diploma level but it didn't materialize. My siblings were schooling too and therefore the scarce resources couldn't keep all of at school at the same time.
