How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After achieving the goal of ensuring that My children are getting better education, the new goal is to start irrigation farming at our half an acre piece of land. The intention is to grow vegetables such as tomatoes, sukuma wiki and spinach for sale. This is a good venture that would transform our living standard for the better since we already have tap water in that in the firm. The income I would make will assist me in taking care of the basic needs like food for the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion. GiveDirectly did well in sending unconditional cash transfers to poor households. Through the transfers, we were able to better our lives. Currently, our children are in school and are learning without any challenge courtesy of the aid. I wish it would continue to support the poor people in society so that they impact their living conditions.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
.With 3 children in secondary school, providing for their educational needs has been a challenging task for me. I am a caretaker at the nearby private school looking after small pupils, a job that did not earn me enough to keep my children in school. Additionally, it was affected negatively by the coronavirus resulting in being laid off. This resulted in huge fees arrears for my 3 children. After receiving the transfer, I spent $430 to clear the fee arrears that was making them stay out of school, something which was bothering me a lot since they were about to drop out due to huge fee balances. At the moment, I feel relieved that my children are learning without any challenges. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient food for the family of 5 children and myself because we are experiencing famine coupled with a high cost of foodstuffs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I work as a caretaker in a school where I am not allowed to be on phone or with a phone during working hours unless it is during a break. One evening at around 3 pm, I heard a message tone from my phone but I had to wait for the break time for me to confirm what kind of message it was. On confirming, I saw a money message from GiveDirectly. I was filled with joy and knelt to thank God for remembering me as well as praying for the organization and its workers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that is vivid is, that getting money at once to pay fees for my children was a miracle. I did not see it coming that one day I would do such payment to my children. Sincerely, if it were not for this transfer, my children would have been sent home due to school fees but I am grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the key aim was to educate my children because investing in their education is constructing a strong pillar for their lives. I am a mother of four children, one is in the university, two are in form 4 and one is in form 1. Therefore I paid KES 10000.00 for the one in university, KES 20000.00 for the ones in form four, and KES 20000.00 for the one who was joining for one. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount in buying some food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am single mother with eight children, I seperated with my husband 4 years ago and I have been working as a chef at a local boarding school. Although I receive a small salary, it supports me to provide the basic needs especially school fees has been a big burden, I have 3 children in secondary school, and upon receiving the first transfer of 55000 KSH I plan to finish their arrears that are at 50,000 KSH. This is a huge relief of burden to my family and am glad Givedirectly visited us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Seeing my son finish class eight brought me a lot of joy, he has been repeating time to time but eventually God has made it possible
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees for my children in secondary school has been a big burden to me, providing food for the family is also a big headache and most of the times I spend so much time to budget for my small income so as to satisfy everyone's needs.
