How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since our area has a shortage of vegetables, I saw it prudent to set a goal of doing a grocery business once I get some money. This idea came after realizing that some people order veggies from another location while others travel to get them. Since I live near a dam, I aim to carry out irrigation to plant the vegetables. By so doing, I will have a source of income from the sales and this will enable me to continue paying school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well. It has uplifted the lives of the community members and ensured that they move out of the pathetic situations they were in. Most people had no houses, and no livestock, and their children were ever out of school for fees. As a community, we are thankful because as of now; we have good houses and livestock. Our children are also back to school for their studies. This could not be possible if it were not for GiveDirectly. So far, I cannot fault GiveDirectly because I am satisfied that it does well and it did a commendable exercise that is unmatched by any other organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Investing in livestock has been my desire for a while. Besides buying a cow using the first transfer, I used KES 16800.00 of the second transfer to buy four goats. Luckily, all four goats are almost procreating. I opted to invest more in goats because they are cheaper compared to cows and they have ready markets. Being a parent to six children, four of them are in primary school. On that note, I opted to pay KES 8980.00 which catered for the school fee balances and extra three months up to October so that my children can concentrate on their studies. Thereafter, I bought three mattresses for my children because they used to sleep on sacks. The cost of the mattresses was KES 11000.00. I also tackled the unplanned activity of taking my mother to the hospital after falling sick. The sickness took KES 7000.00 although it is unfortunate that I lost her. For the remaining amount of money, I reserved it for the family's expenses.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
After a long day of hard work in the sun. I was at home relaxing before I could embark on the evening chores. Then suddenly, when I was perusing my phone, I saw a Mpesa message pop up showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I knew that I would be able to accomplish my goals.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My daily life is different, this is because my children can comfortably study in school. I was able to build a decent house for my family, which I was unable to build before due to financial constraints and unreliable sources of income. I now comfortably enjoy living in a spacious house with my family which is a great milestone. I am so happy and relieved that the support that I obtained from GiveDirectly lifted my living standards amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The moment I received my transfer, My husband and I settled on building a decent house for our family. I was unable to execute these plans before due to financial constraints. I work in the mines and my husband is a masonry, together we are blessed with six children. We, therefore, used KES 20,000 on Iron sheets and other building materials. Since my husband is a masonry it was easier because the cost of labour was reduced completely. Secondly, I used KES 15,000 on my children's school fees. And lastly, I used KES 15,000 in starting a goat-rearing project. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much joy and happiness to our entire family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improving the health of my children by constructing a decent house for them. Currently, they live in a very miserable house that can collapse anytime, also it's roof is leaking when it rains. This has affected them health-wise because they have had frequent coughs due to the chilly nights. I, therefore, intend to construct a safer house to spare them from this menace and to ensure this is offset, it will cost me, 50000 KES. I will invest the remaining amount on livestock, especially goats to act as a long-term project that will cater for our needs in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Ever since I started my work as a casual quarrier in November last year, I have noticed an improvement in my children's education because I am capable of paying for their fees. This has helped them to have ample time in their classes and eventually, my daughter was in position 3 in the last term examination. This gave me the feeling of happiness as a mother and thus, this becomes the source of my joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband has never been responsible in providing for the needs of the family and this has forced me to engage in odd jobs like working in quarries to earn me 2000 KES per week. Despite this enticing income, I am so worried because the job is very risky considering that, women are very vulnerabe at the sites. Therefore, I consider the lack of a decent job as my biggest worry at the moment.
