How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had bought a dairy cow with my initial transfer, but unfortunately, it died suddenly, I was sad about it, but I still trust God that I will be able to accumulate the little that I make to replace the one that perished, this is because this will help us in cutting done the cost of buying milk daily.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The support from GiveDirectly was tremendous, this is because it lifted the lives of the people in our village, thus we are forever grateful for the blessing that came to our village and that of our neighbours, so far I don't see anything that needed to be improved on how the organization conducts its work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My story is long and a sad one too, I separated from my husband years ago, this made life unbearable because I had four children to care for, I was forced to run to my parent's house, they gave me shelter to live in, but it was small to contain the five of us, though I had no choice. when I received my transfer I knew that my prayers were answered, therefore I used KES 30,000 in building a decent house for my family, I was unable to construct one before because I depended on casual jobs which were not reliable, I then used KES 5000 in planting maize, then finally I paid school fees with KES 2000, then bought foodstuffs with the remaining amount. I am forever grateful for the support that gave us hope in life.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am, when I was working on my farm. I heard a message tone from my phone. When I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I have never received such amount of money before. I immediately informed my family members and they all celebrated with lots of joy. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. This is to enable me get enough milk for my family and also to cut the daily cost of buying milk.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village and also small scale farming. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it's only for household basic needs. I had no extra money to buy a dairy cow. I also had no other source of income apart from the farming. My children goes without milk whenever I have no money. This is so demoralizing and stressful. I had always wished to own a dairy cow. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. currently I have a heifer which a bought a KES 32,000. When it reproduce it the next few months I will get enough milk for the family and even sell the extra milk to earn an income to meet other household items. Owning a cow has given me home and effort to work better. I have devoted much of my time on this amazing dairy project. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has broght hope to our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the money I received from GiveDirectly on buying a Heifer at a cost of KES 32,000. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. When my dairy cow reproduce I will be in a position to cut the cost. I used part of the money to plough my farm and bought seeds ready for planting. I am so happy because I will have a good harvest this season. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means I will build my house which has been in bad condition and buy a sewing machine which will then allow me start a business of being a tailor. I have been a single mother since we separated with my husband long time ago and he defied from responsibilities of taking care of the children, I then decided to look for any casual job that will sustain us in the family, so working away from home makes me to strain alot and sometimes my children have to go without meals since I am not around and they are still young. This really worries me alot. I plan to spend KES 60,000 to build my house and spend KES 50,000 in buying second hand sewing machine. The remaining I buy food and stock them.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the morning, when I am going to do casual labour, I love and enjoy washing and doing other cleaning services and that's what I do.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since I am a bread winner to my family, I have to always travel far to look for any casual jobs in order to buy food, where I usually do my casual jobs is far from my home and really makes me to struggle and strain alot.I would like to start my own business at home that will make me stay home and continue earning something.
