How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I didn't had before receiving the transfer is purchasing a heifer. This was not among my goals. When I received the money I found it worth to invest in dairy farming project. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a dairy cow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well buy giving money to the poor in the community to build better house and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 to purchase a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk for the family when it reproduce in the next few months. I purchased hens worth KES 4,000. This is one of the best projects since I will get eggs. The rest of the money I spent on food and other household items. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. It was around 9am when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I was busy doing my daily household chores. I didn't expected any messages from anyone. So I just decided to find out who might have texted me. When I opened the message I felt so overwhelmed with joy, I could not even believe my eyes. I have never received such amount of money before. It was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I stopped whatever I was doing and rushed to inform my spouse. We felt so happy because we knew we would be able to buy a dairy cow. We planned and I went to withdrew the money the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer. When my heifer reproduce in the next few months I will be able to get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic household needs including pay school fees for my children. I always buy milk from my neighbors and it's so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get through this casual jobs is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I work in a quarry. This isn't paying well. Due to recurrent needs at home I had no extra money to save so that I can purchase a dairy cow.I has always wished to own a dairy cow but it was not possible. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly we decided with my spouse to purchase a dairy cow. This will cut the daily cost of buying milk daily which is so expensive. We will save the money that we could have used to buy milk to meet other basic household needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 to purchase a heifer. I always buy milk from my neighbors daily and this is so costly for me because because I do not have a continuous source of income. I will be able to get enough milk when my cow reproduce in the next few months. I purchased nine hens. Poultry keeping project earns me an income through the sales of eggs. I am able to meet other basic household needs. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will improve the living standard of my family. I will invest this by purchasing a dairy cow of approximately 30,000 shillings. It produces will give me income as I will sell the surplus. This will reduce for me burden of doing manual jobs as a source of income to meet my family basic needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. It is at this time because usually my day to day activities involves working in a near my quarry. This work is unfriendly to us women because it requires a lot of energy but we have no otherwise since that is the only available casual jobs. Evening is the time I relax as I know my family will no go to bed empty stomach.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of stable source of income. I usually do casual jobs as a source of income where I get around 100 shillings a day or nothing sometimes. This is not enough against my daily expenditure of 300 shillings. This sometimes force me to depends on borrowing or purchase family basic needs on credit.
