How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
GiveDirectly has delivered us from the bondage of poverty that was very obvious in my household. I can now walk with confidence and Interact with others with dignity as I no longer walk in rags that was the gossip in the village. I can as well provide for more meals for my children, unlike the previous case when we had only a meal in a day.
My children are in school because their fee arrears are well settled and are never sent home more often as before. They have full time concentration in their studies and this has resulted into improved performance. Without GiveDirectly, I would be desperate and hopeless.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has given us power to make choices for better life. Nowadays, I am able to feed my family well without any stress. I can afford breakfast, lunch and supper for my children. This gives me joy and happiness in my heart as I no longer see my them weak due to malnutrition. My children are in school without fee arrears, unlike before when they could stay for days at home. I used to offer cheap labor in sugarcane plantations that was tedious and unreliable. Each day came with a package of worries and uncertainty. I feel relieved and can think, walk and interact with others freely without fear. However, I have never experienced anything bad about GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I have withdrawn the transfer and spent it on paying school fees for my two sons who are in secondary school and University respectively. Education is a true investment that one can count on. The world has really changed that without proper education,it becomes very difficult to be considered for the few employment opportunities. I am hopeful that my sons will soon become professionals that will live a better life than me. This will earn me respect amongst my community members, who have ever thought that we can never make it in life.
