How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I have a goal of securing a title deed for my piece of land. I bought a 2-acre piece using the first transfer and finalized the payments with part of the second transfer. Therefore, once I get some money I aim to get the title deed which will be a mark that I own the land. Thereafter, I plan to fence it and construct a dam for irrigation purposes because I love agriculture and this will help me to have a source of income from the produce.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well. It has uplifted the lives of the community members and ensured that they move out of the pathetic situations they were in. Most people had no houses, and no livestock, and their children were ever out of school for fees. As a community, we are thankful because as of now, we have good houses and livestock. Our children are also back to school for their studies. This could not be possible if it were not for GiveDirectly.
So far, I cannot fault GiveDirectly because I am satisfied that it does well and it did a commendable humanitarian deed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I opted to clear a balance of KES 30000.00 for the plot which I bought using the first transfer. I did this to avoid coming into collision with the owner who sold me the piece of land. Thereafter, I used the remaining KES 24000.00 to boast my poultry business which I had. I bought more chicken to ensure that the business grows well. This is because the growth of the business will enable me to sustain and provide for my family's needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I had just given birth to my bundle of joy. I was still at the hospital because I had developed some complications. I saw a Mpesa notification in the evening showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. It was the best thing that had happened to me because I needed cash that time more than ever. I then broke the good news to my husband the next day. I am so happy for the support that impacted my life greatly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to start a Poultry project with the support that I had received. I am glad that I was able to achieve all this in a short period. I was unable to realise the dream before due to financial constraints. GiveDirectly has empowered me financially thus we are grateful and humbled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a nursery school teacher and my husband is also a teacher in a primary school. Upon the receipt of our initial transfer, we opted to build a Poultry house worth KES 15,000 so has to start a poultry project. I then used KES 5000 to purchase chicks. In addition, I used KES 20,000 in paying for a parcel of land. I am optimistic that with the poultry project I would be able to have money at hand in cases of emergencies. lastly, I saved the remaining amount of money. I am so happy for the support that changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband bought land in this village two years ago. The house he built is not yet complete which exposes us to dangers from wild animals. Recently, we killed a snake that was trying to get inside the house. This scared me a lot because where we live is near bushes that have different kinds of wild animals. I get worried mostly when my spouse is not at home and because I am expectant it is not good for my health. Receiving this money will therefore help me finish the house so that it can be safe for us. My plan for this money is to spend 50,000 KES to finish the structure and build a small shelter for poultry-keeping since that is my next project. The reason why I decided to venture into poultry farming is that this area is prone to drought and farming cannot be a good thing to do. The chicken can also be exchanged for money when they multiply or even food which makes it a good project to have. The remaining 60,000 KES will help me to do some clearing in my compound, fencing, and also taping piped water that I can use to irrigate my vegetables.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy that the poultry project that I started is doing well and they have multiplied. When they continue growing I will not worry anymore about money because they will be my source of income when I start selling them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My main challenge is lack of money to finish our house. I have been having sleepless nights since we killed a snake trying to get inside the building. I have developed high blood pressure because of the pregnancy, this condition gets worse especially when someone has no peace of mind. It is frustrating to know that there is little that I can do to make things better for my family.
