How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to improve my farming techniques over the next year or two so that I may branch out and grow crops other than maize. As a result, I will be able to harvest enough food for my family and surplus for commercial use. As a result, I will be able to invest in more lucrative enterprises and afford to send my kids to private school, giving me financial independence.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving unconditional and free transfers is something that Give Directly excels at, and this is very beneficial because it teaches us how to handle money responsibly and teaches us financial literacy, especially for women who were previously forbidden from handling money or voicing their financial opinions in their homes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our family has saved a lot of time and energy by not having to go to the river every day, and the water is now cleaner and safe for us to drink thanks to the $320 water tank I was able to purchase with my second transfer. This tank holds enough water for domestic use as well as for the cows to drink. This water tank will also be very important because it will allow me to undertake irrigation in the event of little or no rain. I used the remaining $210 to pay off a sizable school debt that had accumulated over two terms for my two high school students.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 Am we were taking breakfast when I heard a message notification on my phone. My son checked it out and said that it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and I was lack of words. This is because I have never received such an amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cut and cut the daily cost of buying milk. I went with my son and collected the money the same day and planned how to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. This is because I always buy milk daily and it's so costly for me. I depend on small-scale farming where I plant maize and vegetables. This is my main source of income since I sell the surplus at the market to get some money. I used the money on school fees for my children in various schools and to meet the daily needs of the family. I make no savings since sometimes the harvest is so small. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but it was not possible because I did not have the money. My children sometimes go without milk whenever I do not have the money. Currently, I have hope that when my cow reproduces I will get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus to meet other basic needs and pay school fees for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled us fulfilled our dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 25,000 on purchasing a heifer. This is because I will get enough milk when it reproduces in the future. I always buy milk and it's so costly for me. I am so happy because this has given me hope that things will be better soon. I paid KES 13,000 school fees for my son who is in form four. This has enabled her to study well without being disturbed like before. I spend part of the money to buy sand ready to blaster the floor of my son's house. I spend the rest of the money on food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow and a peasant farmer who struggles to provide for my family and educate my children. I lost my husband about six months ago and life has been so tough for me because he used to help me handle the farming activities. Hence, receipt of this grant is a great relief for me with regards to raising fees of approximately KES 50,000 annually for my son who is at secondary school (Form Two). Overall, I am delighted that my sin shall have humble study time once I pay the fees on time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Over the last four months, witnessing and supporting my firstborn son to get married has been the source of my happiness. As a widow, I would like to execute all the crucial roles of ensuring the wellness and development of my family. The new family is doing well, and we thank God for this.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Sustaining my family of five has become almost unbearable to me. This is because our only cow is not lactating and drought has destroyed our crops. Each day we spend at least KES 100 on purchasing milk and other food items - something that disturbs me since I have no other source income.
