How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently very different in that, I have a business that keeps me busy the whole day and I am able to earn an income from the same. This was not the not case before GD came, I used to do odd jobs and idling was the order of the day.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
Currently, I do not have any new goals apart from expanding my second-hand shoe business. This has been my desire for the longest time and all my resources will be geared towards seeing it grow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my recent transfer, I bought a sofa set. This has enhanced my living room and it now looks more beautiful and neatly done. The remaining amount I boosted into my second-hand shoes business. This has seen the business grow and even expanded its revenue income which sustains me and even manages to get savings from it.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it would have been had I never received the transfer because I now have seats. I am no longer the laughing stock in our estate. I also do not panic or feel embarrassed whenever visitors come to my place. They look petty and useless but these are the things that greatly affected my self esteem. The transfers also helped me revive my business therefore apart from my garbage collection hustle I earn a few coins from the business too. Generally It diversified my source of income and improved my life.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
At the moment, I do not have any new or additional goals in my life. I am currently focusing on expanding my business empire so that it can earn me more profits. By doing this, I will have created a job opportunity for unemployed youths thus it will reduce the rate of crime in our village. I will also have a sustainable income which will cater for my needs even after GiveDirectly has finished giving me my last batch of transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my most recent transfer to expand my business by adding some stock. My shop has been doing well only that I over stressed it recently when I fully depended on the business to cater for all my needs. I almost squandered all the profits which couldn't allow me to restock the store. I must say the business helped me a lot and GiveDirectly came at the right time when the business was on the verge of falling apart. I spent the remaining amount to buy a set of chairs since I did not have any. I decided to buy these chairs because my neighbors used to laugh at me. I always felt embarrassed whenever I had visitors because they always had to sit on my bed.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goals now are to expand my business further and own a big boutique for clothes either in Eastleigh area or in the Central Business District of Nairobi.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I restocked my business without much struggle and now I am always assured of something to eat at the end of the day. I know I will not go to bed hungry anytime soon again.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfers to expand my clothes business. I have owned a clothes business since the year 2016. I sell items such as sweaters, ladies clothing and shoes. I normally obtain these items from Garrisa Lodge market in Eastleigh or from Gikomba market, and then I resell them by the roadside along Juja road, just near where I live in Mathare 3B village. I used part of the transfers to add stock to this business. My business is going on well now. I also spent part of my transfers to pay my rent and to buy some household items such as seats.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I had not seen the message at all on the day that the transfers came in. I had just woken up when I received a call from a friend of mine who asked me if I had received my transfers. I did not have any idea that the transfers were sent on that day; i must have still been asleep when the message came in. I checked my phone at that moment and I saw the message. I was really happy. I had to confirm again that the message was from Give Directly just to be sure that it was not money that was sent to my phone by mistake. I was so excited and I immediately started to think of how I would spend the money.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My plan is to open a new business where I will be selling jackets at a rental place along juja road. I also intend to add more value to my business by boosting my existing business with shoes so that I can earn more profit and lastly buy house hold goods because I will be able to provide for daily sustenance.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is housing because rent has been a problem to me due to lack of unemployment and not getting enough money for shelter. Daily sustenance is very important because once you have food on your table every day and other needs you are always motivated to work hard. Unemployment being the key problem because there are a few job opportunities and a lot of people are jobless.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambitions is to stop collecting garbage an become a business man. I also want to move out of Mathare slum and live a better life somewhere where their is security good sanitation and friendly environment.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I wake up around 8:00am go to a near by hotel take tea. I then go to Oil Libya Gas Station to hire a handcart for carrying garbage. I head straight to the households that I collect garbage, I start working and after 3 hours of collecting and transportating the garbage to a collection point I stop working. After work I go back home take shower then I relax. Later on I take lunch watch movies and then in the evening I take dinner then sleep. On my free time I play soccer with my friends.
