How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to benefit a lot from the goats that I recently bought. My goal is to start some new projects as soon as they multiply. I am hopeful that this will be achievable since some have already reproduced. Therefore moving forward I will no longer have to strain on fending for my family's basic needs as before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job by assembling all the beneficiaries and educating them about Mpesa. That was so helpful to me because I was not conversant with this platform. They are light and I found it easier during the withdrawal period. I do not see anything that needs a change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying all the necessary materials for building a new house. I had to take this initiative because the previous one was very small and it even collapse one month after being enrolled. I can't thank enough GiveDirectly because were it not for them, I would now be steering under a tree since I could not afford to purchase any of the items at my own cost. I now feel safe from the harmful animals and rodents that have been destroying my properties. I later bought four goats at a total cost of $140. I believe these are the best assets that one can own and earn the benefits within a short period. This is because their offspring mature very fast and they reproduce twice a year. I believe once they increase in number, I will not have to strain on meeting my household needs like before. Later on, I cleared a debt of $36 to a friend and I now have peace of mind. With the remaining amount, I have been buying food and other basic items in my household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3 PM when I was just relaxing with my grandchildren when my mobile phone started ringing continuously. I was so nervous but since I am illiterate, I requested my helper to check the contents of the messages. Upon reading, she confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and felt thankful since I knew my son who was involved in a road accident would finally get better medication.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that my son is now recovering well after being involved in a road accident. It has been stressful because I had no idea where I would get the required cash to settle the hospital bill. Ever since he was admitted life has been very tough because I did not have any income considering he was the sole breadwinner. Being a widow has never been easy at all. I even tried to hold fundraising so that I can be able to settle the bill but in vain. Most of us in my village lived in extreme poverty life therefore getting financial support was not easy. I am now a happy mother to see my son recovering after being discharged from the hospital. I believe that very soon God will restore his health fully and resume his daily hustle. Were it not for this organisation, my son would still be in agony.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a new bed and mattress at a total of KES 10000. Initially, I used to sleep on the floor using mats and old clothes. I have been experiencing so much pain. On some days, I was unable to do the house chores as a result. It is now a relief to me because I have been able to sleep with so much comfort hence no more pains. I also cleared the hospital bill of KES 25000 for my son who was admitted after being involved in a road accident and got a fracture on his leg. Since he was the family breadwinner I was so stressed and worried because this would affect our entire household. I am glad that he is now recovering after seeking better medication. Finally, I bought new clothes and sufficient food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am an old widow without any reliable source of income to depend on. My spouse passed on ten years ago and he was the breadwinner for my family of three children. This made me assume his responsibilities. Since then I have been engaging in casual jobs in construction sites to get food and meet other basic needs for my children in school. However, this affected my health (chest complications) and has made me be inactive economically. I now depend on neighbors to get food which makes me feel being a burden to them. My biggest ambition has been to own livestock that I will keep and sell when they multiply to earn an income. Receiving this money therefore means food security for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, one of my sons in-law sent me KES 5000 as a new year gift. I spend half of the money to buy some medicine and the rest did shopping for the new year celebration. This brought a lot of joy in my heart because for once I celebrated new year differently compared to the previous years where I had nothing to eat on such a day. My grand children also came to visit me and having them around made me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Poor health (Chest problem) is the main challenge that I am facing currently. I developed chest complications five years ago due to the demanding casual jobs in construction sites that I was engaging myself in to make both ends meet for my family. I have tried my best to seek medication but due to lack of enough money, this has never been possible. This has made it difficult for me to engage in any economic activities and remain a beggar. Upon receiving the cash transfers, I will use part of it to seek better medication. I will then use KES 50000 to buy ten goats and two cows that I will keep and sell when they multiply to earn a living.
