How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals. My main concern now is to complete the construction of the new house that I have started. I wish to complete it soon and move in with my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The majority of the people in our village have built better houses and started dairy-keeping projects. Most are no longer purchasing milk which was so costly for them. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We lived in a small house that could not host all my family members comfortably. I spent all the first transfer and the second transfer on purchasing the timber, iron sheets, and other materials that were needed. I was also in a position to pay the workers. The construction is ongoing. The only part that is left is to cement the floor of the house. I have two grown children and they should be living in their own private rooms. Since I did not have the money we were sharing the same roof and this was not culturally good. I rely on the small-scale businesses selling milk to a cooler facility near home. I buy the milk from the farmers at a lower price and sell it at a little bit higher price to earn some profits. I use the money on meeting my daily basic household needs. I had purchased some of the timber with little savings that I had. When I received the transfer I started the construction of the new house. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard to be much better than before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8th February 2022 at around 5 pm. I was at home and I was busy milking the cow when suddenly my child came running and she had my phone in her hand. She told me that my phone had rung. I stopped a bit to check what it was all about and to my surprise, I found out that it was a message saying that we had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and I could not wait to finish the work that I was doing so that I could call my husband and inform him of the good news. He was so happy when he heard about it and we gave thanks for the help.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer from GiveDirectly has brought a very big difference to my life and that of my family. We have managed to achieve our goal of building another house. We have not yet completed building it but we plan to do so with the second transfer. We will hence manage to have a bigger space that is enough for all of us upon finishing the construction.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent the entire recent transfer on building another house. This has always been our wish because the house that we are living in is small and the space is not enough for the six of us. We had bought some timber before we got the transfer but we lacked the money to buy other materials. I usually do the business of selling eggs at the market to earn a living while my husband is a teacher. The money that we get from our hard work, most of it usually goes to the school fee payment of our children who are in a private primary school and to buy food. So when GiveDirectly came with their program to our village, we saw the opportunity to achieve our goal.

I am exited about this transfers from Givedirectly. Recieving this money means buying three dairy cows at KES. 60,000 and build a structure at cost of KES. 45,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the past six months I joined a sacco at my village which has enabled me safe some amount. I was able to buy a 6000 litres storage tank. This is one of my achievement in life. It has reduced a burden of carrying water from a river which is far from my home.
