How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After carrying out the tasks I had planned for the second transfer, I came up with an entrepreneurial objective. I plan to construct a rental house as soon as I have money. After observing a buddy of mine succeed in this sector, I had this notion. I gained the zeal for the same venture thanks to his advice. He also persuaded me that rental properties provide a guaranteed monthly income and do not disappoint in terms of revenue when managed properly. With this kind of investment, I will be able to support my family more easily than I am right now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did an excellent job of providing direct cash assistance to our phones. We were able to comprehend the concept better thanks to the several meetings they held in our neighborhood. This enables us to inquire about the assistance and receive responses. Last but not least, the enrollment procedure was free and impartial. They did not do anything wrong, in my opinion.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, I opted to complete the construction of the house that I had started using during the first transfer. As of now, I am grateful that I completed it and I am comfortable dwelling on it. Since we are faced with water scarcity in our area, I decided to buy a water tank for storing water. The aim of the stored water is for domestic uses during the time there will be no water completely in the area. Since I did not have a bed and I used to sleep on the floor using some boxes and empty sacks, I opted to buy a nice modern bed and a mattress. Since then, I have been very happy sleeping well and comfortably, thank you to GiveDirectly. For the remaining amount, I kept it for the family's use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was taking breakfast at around 7am, my phone vibrated twice and since I do not know how to read, I handed the phone to my helper so that I could be informed what kind of a message it was. The news was the best news ever that one would love to hear every morning. It was the first transfer from GiveDirectly that had been sent. I felt so happy knowing that some huddles were going to be tackled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I have experienced in my life is the fact that, I didn’t have a house and I used to seek for shelter from neighbors but now I have a house though not complete but this has marked a huge difference in my life. I am very grateful for GiveDirectly for coming into my life and removed the shame in me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I prioritized in building a house since I had no house at all thus used to seek refuge from neighbors. Apart from KES 1200.00, KES 750.00 and KES 3000.00 which I used for Medication, school fees for a lower primary child and food respectively, I used the rest in building the house since it was the biggest thing that was bothering me. Although the house is incomplete, I am sure I will complete it once the second transfer is sent.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a house for my family. I am a mother of one child and we all live in a one bedroom house which leaks during rains season. My husband died five years ago thus it is hard for me to get money for school fees and also build a house due to lack of job. I will build a one bedroom house which is spacious for the family. It will cost me KES 50000. I will use KES 30000 to buy goats as investment. I will also use KES 20000 and KES 10000 for school fees and food respectively.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The county government of Kilifi brought relief food in our village last week. That brought happiness to me because I can have three meals a day with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of job is the current challenge that am facing now. I normally do charcoal burning which is tedious and it pays very little. The income can not make me pay school fees for my child and also buy food for the family.
