How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it would have been had I not received the transfer in that if it was not for the money I would not be having a house. I would still be staying in the previous house that was almost falling down. I now feel secure in my current house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly does well because it has enabled us to improve our lives. I did not know I would ever own a good home but through the Give Directly transfers I was able to construct a better house. On the other hand I would urge Give Directly to continue helping people and I have not seen anything they are not doing good.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought building materials with the second transfer which I have used to construct a house. The previous house was was small and in bad condition. I am glad I now have a better secure house. With my old age I am not worried anymore of anyone breaking in my house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember very well it was around 3 o'clock when I saw the notification message on my phone. When I checked its content, I realized it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly informing me that I had finally received my first transfer. I felt so happy since I did not believe it would happen during the enrolment. I will forever be thanking them for fulfilling their promises.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference and achievement in my life is that I managed to clear the fees arrears for my children. This is because previously, they have been sent home several times this was so frustrating and embarrassing at the same time. However, I had no option because I did not have a stable job and my income is meager to sustain all my family expenses at once. They had even started performing poorly as a result of this and I felt guilty as a parent because I felt that I had failed them. I am now happier because ever since I received my first transfer all is well now because they are now studying without any distractions like before which is an assurance of getting good results.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, nails, threads, timber, and several building poles. I bought all these with the intention of constructing a new decent house because the previous one is was in critical and almost falling. I also cleared school fees arrears for my daughter who is in secondary school. I am glad I managed to pay on time since it has been frustrating me for quite a long time. Also, I bought some new school uniforms for her to replace the old ones which were not in good condition. Also, I bought three goats as living assets that I can depend on. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs and some other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means owning a better shelter. I live in a single roomed house that is too small to accommodate my daughter and I. Besides, this same house serves as the kitchen and it tends to get smokey, making it difficult to sleep. This has resulted to endless coughing because of the smoke we inhale every night. In addition to this, I will purchase goats that I will use to finance my daughter's education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is after I wake up feeling strong and energized. Such strength makes it easy for me to undertake my daily duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a stable source of livelihood is my biggest hardship. Being a widow, I have a responsibility of raising my child single handedly. To make ends meet, I burn charcoal for a living. This occupation earns me around 1200 a month an amount that is supposed to cater for all our needs. Life is very unbearable as we can go up to 3 days without food.
