How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Now that I have full possession of my farming land, my intentions are to do farming and grow plenty of food, which will be sufficient for my family. I also intend to keep on doing manual labor on people's farms so that I can add on to what I am receiving from my elder children who are working to take my son to secondary school as well as support my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is really doing a good job. I was in dire need of money and they were a prayer answered and i am so grateful. They should just keep doing what thaey are doing and hoping that others will get helped too.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother and a grandmother who has been doing manual labor on people's farms to take care of both my child and grandchildren. At the time when I received the second transfer, my child, who was in primary school and was about to sit for his final exams, was at home and not attending classes because he had a school fee balance. I therefore spent $58 to clear the balance so that he could go back to school and continue preparing for his exams. It was such an amazing moment for me and my son, as he was excited to be going back to school and joining his fellows in exam preparations. I then used $70 to finish building a two-room house that I had previously started building. I was so much in need of a house because I was sleeping in a one-room house with my child and grandchildren, and this was very inappropriate and uncomfortable. I also spent $250 to buy two beds and two mattresses so that we could have a better place to sleep because we used to sleep on the floor on mats and on ragged and worn-out mattresses, which were very uncomfortable. Finally, I spent $150 on a piece of land that I had started buying for farming purposes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Around 3 pm, I heard a strange sound coming from my phone, but because I couldn't read, I didn't pay much attention to it until later, around 7 pm, when my daughter returned from the market. I mentioned the sound to her, and she checked my phone, informing me that the first payment from GiveDirectly had been sent to my account. A rush of indescribable joy swept over me, leaving me utterly stunned. At that moment, it felt like a wave of happiness was embracing me, and I realized that my dignity and privacy were going to be restored.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Receiving the GiveDirectly cash transfer has transformed my life in ways I could only dream of. It's like a miracle that has changed everything. I remember when my children and I used to share a cramped house, with some of us even sleeping in the corridor due to the lack of space. It was unhygienic and offered no privacy, but poverty left us with no other option. However, things have taken a remarkable turn. Thanks to GiveDirectly, we're now able to build a separate house, something I never thought possible. This new home will give my husband and me our own space to sleep, while our daughters will have the current house. This incredible change, made possible by GiveDirectly, means we no longer have to worry about privacy issues. If it weren't for this amazing organization, we'd still be trapped in the same cycle, struggling with our living conditions and longing for a better life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living with my husband and two grown-up daughters in that cramped single-room house was becoming quite a challenge. Our privacy was almost nonexistent, and I constantly worried about the lack of space. When the cash transfers from GiveDirectly came through, it felt like a ray of hope had pierced through the clouds. Without a second thought, my husband and I decided to use the money to build a new house. We eagerly went to the market and purchased 22 iron sheets for $220. These would become the roof of our new home. Additionally, we invested $100 in building poles to ensure our new house would stand strong. As the construction began, I could already picture the happiness and peace of mind that awaited us in our separate dwelling. Our daughters would get to keep the current house, and my husband and I would have our own space at last. Once the new house is completed, I'm planning to use the remaining funds to start an agricultural venture. It's incredible how a little financial assistance can completely transform our lives, and I'm excited to see the future unfold with newfound comfort and opportunities.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The nature of my house at the moment does not give me the courage to welcome visitors. In case I happen to host some, it will force me to spend my night on the floor as I give space for them. This has never given me happiness but instead lowered my boldness. My ambition has always been to own a decent and spacious house that can accommodate us. To ensure this is solved, I intend to spend a better portion of my transfers ($600) to have this done. In addition, I will buy a new bed and a mattress to replace the old ones and this will cost me an extra $100. The remaining amount will support my daughter's education and also to buy food. This is, therefore, what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite missing my 2 children who work away from home, one thing that I feel grateful about is the fact that they have been so supportive of me. Since I lack the energy to fully engage in farming, they have consistently been sending me some cash that goes into sustaining my household needs. This has brought happiness to me because, since the beginning of this year, I have never sought help from relatives. What a happy moment!
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband is aged, 75 years old now, and since we are living in a polygamous family, this has brought about more challenges for us. Being a housewife has altogether complicated my life and I depend on subsistence farming which is not reliable now because I lack the energy to actively engage in tilling my farm. This has pushed me to do small-scale farming which has resulted in low harvest despite the heavy rains that we received this season. In my consideration, food insecurity stands out to be my biggest challenge.
