How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After I received both transfers, I accomplished most of the plans that I had written down. My family has transformed a lot and am so grateful to Givedirectly for ensuring that all the processes were adhered to. I do not have new goals at the moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by ensuring that all enrollment processes were fair and every household received cash transfers. We appreciate the fact that we were considered to participate in this project. I don't have any negative views.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my second transfer, I purchased materials for constructing a house for my son. I spent KES 30,000 on buying iron sheets, timber, nails, and labor inclusive. For the longest time possible my son had been going to a neighbor's house to spend his night. I am grateful that he can spend his night in his place and also study in a conducive environment. With KES 5,000 I spent in paying the school fees balance I had for my son who is in form four. He is currently doing his final exams and am so delighted and hoping for best results. With the remaining part of the transfer, I spent on buying clothes and foodstuff for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning when I turned on my phone. I had switched off at night. I got a message notification indicating that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I immediately inform my family members and everyone celebrated. The whole neighborhood were full of celebration that day becuse they received their transfers. I withdraw the money the following day. We had to take our time and plan well. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have paid school fees for my children in various schools and colleges. This was one of my main focus. My children used to be sent home and this was affecting their performance in school. I was so stressed up and demoralized because I had no money to clear the school fees on time. My children too sometimes were being disturbed and they were worried. I depend on small scale farming at home as a source of income. This earns me small income and because of the recurring daily basis needs I was not able to save. Went received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to pay all the fees. My children are studying well now and there performance has improved now. I am so grateful for the support. I have peace of mind to do my daily activities at home without stress like before. I hope for the best in future because my children are educated.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 to purchase a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk for the family when it reproduce in the future. I purchased two goats. It's an investment because goats reproduce faster and helps during an emergency. It's easy to sell. I paid school fees for my children in secondary school and college. The rest of the money I bought tow sacks of maize. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a son who is 14 years old. In our culture, once a boy has been circumcised he is supposed to be sleeping in a separate house from the parents. But due to lack of money, this has not been achieved. My son has to go to the neighbor's house to sleep and study. As a parent, this is not something am proud of. He has to study too and this may not be conducive when living in someone else house. So when I receive this money I will build a house for him costing KES 30000. once this is achieved the remaining amount I will spend on paying his school fees to make sure he studies well in school
What is the happiest part of your day?
I planted maize and all germinated well and am yet to start first weeding. Despite the scorching sun and drought. Iam happy that it is doing well. This has brought joy and happiness into my life since food insecurity will end when it yields well.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The current challenge we are facing is financial constraints like paying for my children's school fees. We depend mostly on weeding people's farms. I earn KES 500 a day but this is subject to the availability of work. At the moment this has been futile due to persistent drought.
