How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Two of my sons who are enrolled in secondary school will take their final national exams next exams. Like any other parent, I want to see my children succeed in life, and the only way that will happen is if they have a better education. My dream is to see them complete a university education. Even though I don't have a steady source of income, I will use the charcoal sales to save any money I can to help pay for their university education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In addition to providing us with cash without conditions, the personnel of the organization continues to communicate with us after sending us our funds. This is a beautiful gesture in my opinion because it demonstrates care, humility, and respect on their part. Many lives have been changed by them, and the majority of people now have greater economic power. They are working hard, and I would encourage them to keep it up.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Raising the school fees for my two secondary-school-aged children has been difficult. They were not permitted to attend class at the time I received the second transfer because they owed the institution outstanding tuition. I used $450 to make up the arrears as a result. I'm pleased that I made it possible for them to continue their studies. At addition, my existing home is too small for us, forcing our kids to look for a place to sleep in the houses of the neighbors. Such arrangements have never made me feel at ease because I am unable to keep an eye on them while they are far away. I started building a house for them with the first disbursement, but I ran out of money before it was finished. Therefore, I spent $100 to buy some of the building supplies needed to finish the project. I am grateful to the group for altering my life, and I am delighted about it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the transfers from Give Directly was the greatest blessing I have ever had in my life. I was in the farm with my sons burning charcoal as that has been my source of income. I heard a message notification ringing, my son rushed to confirm, upon reading the message, it was from Give Directly. I was so happy, in my entire life I have never received such a huge amount in one day without working for it. I thank Give Directly for the transfers as it changed my life and that of my son's.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My peace of mind is finally restored as I have no worries if it rains, before the transfers, it was so hectic moving the household item during rainy seasons, having built a modern house is the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a son who was to join form one in a boarding school, I used Kshs 35,000 to buy the school's requirements and part of it to pay his form one school fees. Since I got married, we have been living in a grass thatched house, which could collapse anytime during rainy season, most of the times it was leaking, and I had to move some of my valuable household items into one corner. I used the remaining balance of Kshs 20,000 to build a modern two bedroom house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of 7 members and I am a widow who depends on casual work. My husband died seven years ago and since then I have been struggling to provide for the family necessities. I have three children who are schooling. One is in college, secondary and primary school respectively. They have had school fees problems and sometimes they are sent out of school. Upon receiving the money, I will use KES 90000 to clear the balances. The one in college has a fees balance of KES 50000 and the one in secondary has fees balance of KES 40000. This will make them stay at school full-time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first daughter had her first birth six years ago through operation. It was not easy to handle her during her maternity period. Last year she got her second baby without operation. She got a baby girl. Her normal birth brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As a widow, I have depended much on agriculture. When I get enough food for the family then the money I get from my work caters for the school fees. However, we have not received rains for the last two years. This has caused famine in our village. The challenge I currently face is lack of food for the family.
