How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I want to build some rental housing on an empty lot in my residential compound so that I may increase my household's income. Since my salary primarily goes toward the bank debts I have been taking out, I cannot rely on it. Regardless of how little I am able to save, I intend to do so in order to advance toward my objective.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving women priority in the financial transfers was a great initiative, in my opinion, on the part of Give Directly. The majority of us are typically excluded from decision-making, therefore having us as the recipients gave us the authority to choose how the money should be spent. Additionally, since single mothers were taken into consideration, they did not discriminate based on marital status. We are elated and filled with pride.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am appreciative of being one of the recipients. With the help, I was able to finish plastering my house, which I had been putting off for the past three years since I began building. The majority of the rooms were plastered by myself, and the house is now tidy. In addition, I have four children, two of whom are in primary school and the other two are in secondary and university education. Being a single parent makes it difficult for me to meet all of our needs. My teaching salary is insufficient to cover our expenses, and I frequently have to take out loans. Due to my $400 investment in their tuition, I am happy to report that their outstanding debt has been lowered.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was taking my evening meal together with my two children when I heard a message tone from my mobile phone. I decided to check but to my surprise, I realised that it was from Segovia Technology informing me that I had received my first cash transfer. Due to the excitement that I had, I jumped up and down like a baby knowing very well that I would finally clear fees for my son in university.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to install electricity in my house. This has been my dream but I did not have the requirements needed to apply for the connection. Therefore for years, I have been using solar and candles. The little earnings from my daily hustle could not fend for my four children and afford the cost of electricity. For some days I could stay in the dark because the solar was not reliable. As a result, my property could get stolen. Therefore, for that reason, I felt there was a need to revamp electricity. Currently, I feel I am very safe, there is enough light throughout, also I have been charging my neighbour's phones and earning an income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 8000 to buy two wooden doors to fix for my house. I was always living in fear and worry because the previous one had worn out terribly and it was even hard for me to travel since my properties would get stolen. Also, I used KES 30000 to install electricity in my house. I have been using candles and solar panels which were not reliable besides being expensive. Additionally, I paid fees for my son who is in his third year at university. With the remaining amount of money, I settled the debts and loans from mobile banking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As you can see, I moved into an incomplete house. I ran low on money but because the vital bits had been done, I opted to move. It would be a delight if I finished it. I believe that this money will be a good boost. I might not be able to complete it but I should make progress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My joy comes from knowing that no matter how hard a situation might be, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I'm happy that through hard work, my children are in school and nothing can beat that.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a single parent, I have a huge financial burden on my shoulder. I have four children. One is in University, another in high school, and the other two in primary school. My salary cannot cater to all these fees. I have been trying to start businesses but they either fail or I lack enough funds to run them.
