How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I want to continue educating my six children until they finish school. I will be able to achieve this by saving little by little from my daily income. I would also request GiveDirectly for an additional transfer since I still have a long way to go with my family. An additional transfer will give me a big boost.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your help. I really didn’t know how my children would have gone to school. Before the transfers came, people used to ask me how I am going to take my children to school. They knew that I had nothing like money to educate them. Thank you so much GiveDirectly, you came at the right time and my children got a big push toward their education. I have no complaints at all I am so happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent kes. 33000 in paying school fees for a whole year for my two sons who are currently in form one. I save kes. 20000 in my Mpesa account in waiting to settle their next term school fees. With the second transfer, I managed to buy two bulls for plowing my farm at kes. 30000. Before I started receiving these transfers, I used to till my farm with my hands and it was hard, time-consuming, and cumbersome. I do maize. Beans, peace, and vegetable farming. I also do casual work on a construction site. My husband is very old and can’t work. He always takes care of our cows by grazing them around our home. Thank you so much GiveDirectly, indeed you have changed my life and my family’s life for the best.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at the quarry Quarry where I used to work as a casual labourer when I heard a message notification from my phone.Since am illiterate I had to wait to get back home and have my son check it out. He told me that I had received the transfers and wow! I was very happy and thanked God for it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I nolonger experience back pains and I can sleep comfortably. My stress levels has reduced and am now am a happy mum to my kids
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Working in a quarry has never been easy for me because I barely slept at night because of lifting heavy blocks. since I am the bread winner of the family,I had no option other than to work to provide for my children. My dream has always been starting a business but I couldn't raise enough capital by myself and being enrolled in this program was a dream come true.i spend KES 5500 to buy potatoes and everything that I needed to start a business whereby I see fries to the casual labourers in the quarry. I also spent KES 8500 to buy bed mattress for my kids who were sleeping on the floor and saved the balance towards my son's school fees.i am happy that I'm earning a better income and able to settle my bills more easier than before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
During our time girls were not allowed to go to school, the community used to see us as a source of wealth and this made my dad give me away for married at an early age. Not being able to even step on a school gate me want to make sure that my children do not face the same fate. Currently, I owe the school where my children study KES 2600 that I need to pay but lack of money has not made it possible. As a housewife, my wish has always been to have a business that generates a good income so I can be able to pay my children's school fees with ease but unfortunately, lack of capital has made me not realize my dream. These transfers will therefore help me to achieve the above by using KES 2600 to clear the school fees arrears, buy two beds with two mattresses at KES 20,000 because I have been sleeping on the floor together with my children for the past 10 years, use KES 20,000 to start a business of selling sardines in the village and save the rest of the money for my son who is joining secondary school soon. Receiving this money means a good education for my children and also a good sleep on my new bed and mattress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Of late I have been getting clients for the charcoal that I sell. Earning money from it has given me joy and happiness because I was able to buy food during Christmas for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We have been overwhelmed with too many responsibilities with no money to solve them. The largely affected area in our lives is buying food for the family and because of this, we had to forget about talking lunch. Insufficient capital is the most current challenge that I face in life.
