How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I received these transfers, my children had a difficult time studying and doing their homework. I did not have chairs and a table where they could sit and do their work comfortably and they were forced to use water containers in place of a chair and a table. I am glad that they can now study well after I bought some chairs and a table. In fact, they even enjoy doing their work more than before. I do not need to force them to do this as I used to. I am also glad that I have some livestock on my farm, something I never dreamt of owning. My meagre daily wages would have never made it possible for me to buy them since most of the money I would earn would go into the daily needs. I am so grateful for GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I loved that the transfers were sent straight to me and all that I was promised came as a full amount. Had there been any middlemen, I doubt if we would have received the whole amount of the transfer. Everything was done satisfactorily well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a big portion of the transfer to buy two young cows for rearing to add to the ones I previously bought using the first transfer. I also bought some furniture for my house. I did not have any furniture and y children had quite a rough time studying and doing their homework. I spent the rest on food and school fees payment.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is the dairy cow that I bought with this transfer. There are days that my children would go to school without taking tea just because we did not have money to buy milk or we missed on on the roadside suppliers of this so precious commodity. This pained me a lot but I could do very little to solve this situation. I could only hope against hope that one day I would have enough cash that would enable me buy at least one dairy cow that would assure my family of enough and constant milk supply both for selling and local consumption. I am now raising a very happy family and I look forward to even better days ahead for our family.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I never expected that I could ever receive such huge amounts of money from anyone that could allow me realize my dreams much earlier than I had expected. I was surprised for a moment and later on I withdrew the money and embarked on implementing the plans that I already had.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used part of my first transfer to buy livestock for keeping at home and the remaining amount was used to buy food and pay school fees for my children. For a long time I had used a lot of money to buy milk that was hardly enough to feed my family and even hard to find at times. This had strained me a lot and left me thinking of how I was going to accumulate enough money and at least buy one dairy cow that would see me feed my young family well. It was however not possible to do this until I received money from GiveDirectly. This was because the little that I got from my daily casual jobs was barely enough to buy food and meet other basic necessities for my family. I now feel proud as a responsible parent having bought the dairy cow and looking forward to it reproducing such that I would be able to meet other needs of my family such as payment of school fees for my children once they start their secondary education.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means saving ksh 60 daily that i usually spend in buying milk for family consumption as well as an additional ksh60 income daily since i intend to buy one dairy cow for milking. I will then spend $200 of my transfer to buy 5 sheep as long term investment since sheep farming is less laborious and multiplies at a fast rate.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My usual day entails engaging in casual jobs in people's farms. Getting such jobs is never a guarantee since most people have declined farming due to land unproductivity. Coming back home every evening having earned some income for family upkeep after securing a job is what puts a smile on my face
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a single mother of 6, supporting the needs of my children and especially paying their school fees is the biggest challenge i face. I do casual jobs like cultivating people's lands, fetching firewood from the forest and selling them in local hotels or schools as well as doing household chores for my neighbours at pay. The income i get from these jobs can't sustain all the needs of my family, something that sometimes forces me to ask for fundraising from friends and relatives.
