How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I got married at a tender age and unfortunately, my spouse passed on when we were young couples that meant I had to carry all the burden. Taking care of 8 children on a meagre income from the causal jobs I did in the village couldn't sustain my family's needs and save to renovate the weak grassed thatched house that I was staying in then. One day while I was at work the house collapsed and killed my child who was sleeping at that time. My life was in despair and we were rendered homeless hence I had to borrow a sleeping place from my in-laws for a year. The village members were able to raise some money and built for me a small house to stay in out of the communal empathy they had. My life is different in that I have been able to build a decent spacious house which I never knew I would have and it's with the greatest joy that my children are no longer worried of where to sleep.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly gives unconditional cash transfer to the poorest household in the community without discrimination, as a result, it has brought positive change in my society.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Previously, I used to cook in my house and the exposure to smoke mostly at night was hazardous to our health since this house wasn't well ventilated. I spent the larger part of my second transfer on building a kitchen which I am using to cook in and now we can sleep comfortably at night. The remaining amount I bought household furniture such as a bed, mattress, a table and food for my family's consumption.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is my new house. I build a more spacious iron roofed house with the first transfer I received from Give Directly. Initially, I was staying in a very old house and it was seriously leaking when it rained. During rainy seasons we could be rained on and our bedding getting soaked, it was a very terrible life. I really thank Give Directly for changing my life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My phone beeped and my son is the one who heard the sound first, he called me mummy you have a message, I told her kindly check who has sent me the message may be its Safaricom Messages I said to him. Reading the message he shouted you have received money from Give Directly. I could not believe until he became closure to me and we read the message together. He said mummy lets pray and thank God, and we prayed together. Later in the course of the day, I went to Mpesa withdrew the money and bought building materials.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
Since my husband died I have been staying in a very old house, the roof was leaking when it rained. I had no hope of building a better house because I had no hope of getting any financial assistance from anyone but to cope with the situation. Immediately I received money from Give directly decided to buy all building materials starting from iron sheets, nails, polls, doors and windows. I built a new decent and spacious iron roofed house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved shelter for my household. I am a widow that depends on casual labor that pays very little. I would like to spend the transfer on construction of a better house that is spacious enough to accommodate my family. My current house is leaky and may fall anytime.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I get hired to offer casual labor services. This is the only hope as from it, I occasionally buy food when I get paid. The essence of provision to my family brings me joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I am facing in life is unreliable source of income. I depend on casual labor that is unpredictable and pays very little. This makes it very difficult to meet the daily needs of my family like food and clothes.
