How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For now, I do not have any new goals and I am grateful that I was able to accomplish some which were sending my children to school, and buying livestock among others. At least I now have assets that I can readily sell in case of any emergency and pay fees for the children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does best by making sure that they assembled and taught us how best to secure our money from theft and losses. This has been of help to us because there were no theft or bribery cases. Also, we were equally given the chance to choose what to purchase according to our heart's desires.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying fees of KES 4000 for my five kids in primary school. They have been staying home for almost two weeks because of the arrears which have been stressing them a lot. The money came in good time because they would be forced to repeat the same grade if they would miss the exams. Also, I bought a bed and mattress for a total of KES 11000. This was to replace the traditional bed that I have been using for years. I used to experience lots of fatigue and pains, especially every morning and this could hinder me from doing house chores. In addition, I bought three pieces of iron sheets KES 1800 for the completion of my house which was under construction. Also bought two goats at KES 8000 that will serve as the main assets that I will rely on at any time. I later bought foodstuffs for my family and other household needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I still remember very it was around 8 am, I had just woken up preparing myself to go to the bush for charcoal burning, an activity that I have been relying on for our upkeep. I heard my mobile phone ringing, I could not believe my eyes when I saw the message indicating that I had received my transfer. I informed my spouse about the receipt of the transfer. It was such a joyful moment of my life praising God and thanking the organization for fulfilling its promise. I had to suspend my daily program and went to the nearby Mpesa shop to withdraw the transfer before we could sit with my family to plan on how to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a decent shelter for my family is the biggest difference in my life. Currently, we are enjoying our night in a better house. I am no longer worried about the rains at night something that has given me peace of mind. In addition, I was able to settle the debts at the shop making me more peaceful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For more than 5 years since I got married, I had not been able to own a decent shelter for the family due to the poverty situation that we are struggling with. For all those years we have been living in a small, grass-thatched temporary house that is leaking during the rainy season. After receiving the transfer, I spent KES 30,000 to construct a decent one-roomed house for the family by purchasing 16 iron sheets, and building poles and paying the construction costs. At the moment, I am happy that we are living in a nice iron-roofed house. In addition, I spent KES 5000 to settle the debts at our nearby shop where I had been taking foodstuffs on bills. I remained with KES 20,000 which I had saved, it will assist me in meeting other necessities like food and clothing since my husband is jobless after quitting his driving job.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My children have been inconsistent in school attendance. This is because I have not been able to pay their school fees in time. I am planning to use KES40,000 from the GiveDirectly transfers to pay for my children's school fees. This will assure them enough study time in school and will definitely translate to improved academic performance. I will use a further KES 50,000 to construct a two-bedroom semi-permanent house for my family. We are currently squized in a one-bedroom house and this has denied me privacy for long. With a two-bedroom house, my husband and I are assured of a separate room. Doing all this will make me happy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I rely on charcoal burning to feed my family. Recently, I have been making good sales in charcoal and this has brought joy in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Inability to cater for my children's school fees is the biggest challenge I'm currently facing. This is because l lack a reliable source of income that can take care of their schooling. This has consequently affected their academic performance and occasionally come home at the end of the study term with unsatisfactory results. All this happens because they do not have enough study time in school unlike their colleagues.
