How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It is evident that my life is different now, I lost my job due to my sickness, I had to sell most of my properties to enable me to seek further medical care. Times are hard therefore the friends that I could depend on were also struggling to make ends meet on their side, I was helpless and the only remaining option was for me to sell a piece of my land. Fortunately, I received my transfer, meaning that I no longer needed to sell my Land, The transfer also helped me in paying back my debts. I am so happy that GiveDirectly came to my aid, May God continues to strengthen the work of the organisation that has impacted all our lives without asking anything in return.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has impacted the lives of so many people positively in my village, the process is transparent and they keep to their promises.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been battling with a medical condition that has drained all of my finances, I wanted to sell a piece of land so that I could look for advanced medical care, When the transfer came I no longer needed to sellout my land, instead, I used Ksh 25,000 in settling the debts that had accrued, I also managed to buy a parcel of land too worth Ksh 25,000, the first transfer settled my medical expenses.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the transfer was a great turn of events in our household. It brought back the hope of owning back our small piece of land which was up for sale at that period. We were really thankful that we would at least see our debts settled once more, and extra cash to visit the hospital for a check-up after ensuring that all the household goods were in place.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the renewed hope of seeing a doctor at the appointed time once more after failing quite a several times before. It has been hard sticking to the doctor's note since in most cases, I had to struggle to get the consultation and medical fees which had always been a requirement in every visit. Since I received the transfers, I have managed to attend a comprehensive check-up and added the medicines which were almost running out of stock.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having been anaemic for quite some time, seeking medical attention from the hospital has been so straining not only to my immediate household but also to my parents and relatives. I had been surviving on fund drives which not everyone in the village was willing to always participate in giving. At some point, we opted to obtain a soft loan from a friend with the option of selling out a piece of family land to pay him back. Upon receiving the transfers, it was quite a relief to us all. We managed to clear the debt which stopped the plans to sell a piece of land, I also obtained 24 iron sheets which we are looking forward to using in the construction f a new house, attended and paid for the medical check-up, and also bought foodstuff for the household with the remaining amount.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a stable source of income. I have been aspiring to start my own business and live a decent life. I have been doing house construction work within the village which is hard to come and when I get one, I earn a meager wage of Ksh 300 a day. Due to this, I intend to start poultry farming as a business. I am planning to spend Ksh 30,000 of the transfer to start me off.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is because when I am informed in the morning that there is some construction work to do, brightens my day. The construction work has been hard to come by and when I don't get one, I engage myself working in my small piece of land (0.1 of an acre) where I have grown maize for domestic use.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is a lack of capital to start a business. Over the years, I have been struggling to save some money from my house construction work to start me off but in vain due to various dynamics of life. Also due to financial constraints, my wife whom we had lived with for 7 years left with my two children something that has caused me sleepless nights. Seeing Give Directly in our village has given me a sigh of relief knowing that my dreams of starting poultry farming will soon materialize.
