How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is totally different than how it would have been because I am now a proud owner of two dairy cows that I am keeping in my compound. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I had no asset that I could lean on in case of any financial crisis, hence it is now a relief to me and my family. The cows are now giving me free milk and I normally use a few liters for my family consumption and sell the rest to our nearby dairy shops at KES 50 per liter. The fact that milk is in high demand, I am positive that I will become wealthier very soon. To add to that I am now sleeping comfortably in a decent house with good beddings. My health has improved and I am so thankful to this organization.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDiretly does well in my village and up to date, we have been to God for it to get more funds and help once again. This is well seen in the development of the village, those of us who were homeless now have shelter, those who never have a chance to buy assets now have several. The other good thing is, there was no discrimination at all for all the deserved households. Hence I od not see any part GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a house at KES 30000 from my relative who lives in town. Also, I bought bags of cement and sand to renovate it becasue some of its walls were weak and they are now well plastered. In addition, I am planning to seek some medical attention since I have been unwell for quite some time. Considering I am a widower and living all alone it has been so hectic. Also, I bought e new bed and a mattress to at least replace the old mats that I have been using for years. With the remaining money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I still remember very well it was around 8 in the morning when I was cleaning my compound when I heard my phone ringing. Without wasting time I decided to check who could have sent the message early that morning. I realized that I had finally received my transfer that I had anxiously been waiting for. I was overwhelmed with joy and started planning on how best I could utilize it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I now own dairy cows. I opted in purchasing them because they have numerous benefits that I will soon enjoy. The benefits are as follows; getting plenty of milk for free whereby my family will be drinking and I will be selling the reming litres to my neighbours and locals markets for income purposes. I will finally use the profits to start another business so that I can double the income. This will really help me especially in paying my children's school fees and fulfilling their other basic needs. I am optimistic that I will no longer strain as before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying two dairy cows at KES 32000.h he These have been living assets that I have been longing to own for the longest time but I could not afford them. In addition, I bought some beddings which include a wooded bed and a mattress. Previously I used to sleep on some old mats which I was so uncomfable. Also, I bought a semi permanent house which belonged to my relative who is no longer in the village. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it in buying enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been dreaming for long to have a well structured house but due to poor life situation I have never been able to do so. Now that you have visited me I can see that my dream will soon come true. When I receive the transfer I intend to use sh. 25,000 to build a good house which is spacious enough. I will also use sh.45000 to buy 3 cows which will provide milk and help in financial emergency. The remaining amount will help in all my basic needs and boosting my grandchildren education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is mostly the happiest part of the day, because at this time I always rest after a long day of stress and struggle.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife passed away three years ago leaving me in a desperate situation. I depended on her to provide most of the basic needs because I am asthmatic and cannot do physical jobs. I was left lonely with no one to support me since my children are all adults fending for themselves. This has caused me a lot of stress and at some point it led me to depression. I have now developed hypertension. This has been the biggest hardship of my life.
