How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I am now sheltering in a decent shelter. I have been yearning to own a better house but because of the high poverty level, I couldn't buy the materials even renovate it. Its roof was in bad condition and could leak excessively especially in the winter seasons. Also, some of my children had to seek some shelter every night considering they were all grown-ups, and squeezing ourselves in the small house was not right according to our traditions. There is a huge relief now because we are all sheltering under one roof which has been my long-time dream. We no longer have to worry about the rains and even the heavy downpours.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by making sure they visit all the needy households in my region. No one was left out in the enrolment process provided they were among the residents of the given area. They also never considered, gender, tribe, or even tribe. Therefore I do not see any part that GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some livestock which includes which include five goats. I had desired to keep them for a long but I couldn't afford them becsue they were very expensive. I also buy some iron sheets, timber, and nails, this was for the completion of the house that I had initially constructed. I later paid the mason KES 4000. Also, I paid school fees for my children who are still in primary school. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 7 AM when I was preparing myself for the day when I heard my phone vibrating. On checking, I realized it was Mpesa message from GIvedirectly. I had finally received the long-awaited money. The message really made my day and due to the excitement that I had, I had to inform all my family about the good news and celebrated together.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The goats that I am currently rearing in my homestead have brought the biggest difference in my daily life. First, I settled in keeping them because they reproduce twice a year and their offsprings mature faster compared to the other domestic animals. This means that I will be wealthy within a short period of time. Also, their food is readily available and requires minimal supervision. One has already started reproducing which gives me hope that they will multiply within a short period of time. In the next few months, I will start a business of selling the matured offsprings to the markets hence getting an income. I do believe that this is going to be my potential business. Metting my family's needs will be easier and with time I am positive I will achieve most of my goals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfers on buying some livestock such as four goas. For all those years, I have been longing to own them but because of the poverty life, this was not achievable. I also boight some building materials which include iron sheets building poles, threads, and timber. I bought all these with an intention of constructing a new house since the previous one was not spacious to accomodate my whloe family and that's why I opted to build a new one. I used the remaining amount of money to buy food and other household items such as jerricans.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Our family being a polygamous set up, I share the same house with my co-wife. I am not comfortable in this situation because there is no privacy at all. Besides, the house is not spacious enough, forcing me to sleep on the floor as it cannot accommodate an extra bed. Receiving this money therefore means, constructing a house for my family. This will fulfill my dream of living in comfort.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my is in the morning. My body is normally relaxed at this time before I embark on my duties. This is because my day is full of energy draining activities such as cutting down trees to burn charcoal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is my biggest hardship. This has resulted to difficulties in providing for my family. I rely on charcoal burning that can take up to 2 months before I earn. This means I spend the rest of my days taking loans and purchasing commodities on credit. Once I sell my charcoal, I clear all the debts and the cycle continues.
