How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My major priority was for me to build a decent house for my family, which I did with my first transfer, the accomplishment that I was unable to reach due to financial constraints. I desire to start my own business, therefore I plan to save up the money from my monthly wages so that I can be able to achieve that second goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, The organization does wonderful work in supporting the less fortunate in the society, in that if it were not for GiveDirecty, then I do not think that I would have been able to build a decent house for my family in a short period. so far I have not witnessed anything that is not done well. I am grateful for the support that changed our lives and that of my people as a whole.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of three children, at the moment I work in a local eatery, I am paid daily, though the cash is not enough to cater for all my family needs, I used my first transfer in building a house, therefore upon receiving the second transfer I paid a debt of KES10,000 which has been pending for a while now due to lack of money to offset it, I then bought two goats to start a goat rearing farming, in addition to that I bought beddings at KES 5500 and paid school fees at KES 2000, then lastly I used the remaining amount in buying foodstuffs and school fees. I am thankful for the support that changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While doing my cooking job at mu work place where I was employed at a cafeteria, I received a message at around 9am. I was filled with happiness but I tried to compose myself and decided to keep quiet till evening when I left for home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly came into my life, things were pathetic. I had no house which was very shameful to the community, my primary school children had no school uniforms, and we had difficulties in getting some food. But as of now I am a happy man because I have a nice house, my children have school uniforms and we can access food with easy not as before. I sincerely appreciate the good work done by GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before withdrawing I made a list of my priorities in a chronological order depending on agency. Therefore I bought some iron sheets with an aim of constructing a new house because the one I had was very small, congested and leaking. For that matter, I bought some iron sheets for KES 13300.00, building poles for KES 5000.00. After settling the house issue, I paid school fees and also bought some uniforms for my primary school children amounting to KES 7300.00. I also bought some clothes and used the rest for food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I came back from my matrimonial home 6 years ago, with my 3. This is after I had a conflict with my co wife. According to our culture, once a girl is married she can no longer stay in her parents house. I was forced to constructed a small structure which looks like a kiosk because I did not have enough finances. Receiving this money means good shelter for my family. I am planning to spend KES 50,000 to build a spacious house so that we can stay comfortable. Other than that that I will invest the remaining amount on livestock which will be a source of income in future because I can sell them when they multiple.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, I was busy with my daily chores when I received a call from my brother-in-law. He informed me that he has sent me money in my account that can use to support my family. To me, it was a big gift because at that particular time I did not have anything in my pocket. This incident brought a lot of joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Unstable source of income is the biggest hardship I am currently facing. I am a small businesswoman running a vegetable kiosk in the village. It has a stock worth KES 1000 which gives me a profit of KES 200 on a good day. This amount is insufficient to cater to all my family's basic needs such as food and water. Approximately, my family spends KES 300 a day.
