How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I would like to achieve is constructing a business premise where I plan to open up a shop and a posho mill. No shop is near our village and the people usually have to cover a distance of about two kilometers to get to the nearest shopping center. I was able to start a small business of selling chips and bar soaps. The business is thriving well since the soaps usually get sold out. I hence saw that starting a shop and a posho mill business was going to be a big opportunity for me. I am in a self-help group where we usually contribute KES 2200 every two months. I am waiting for my turn to receive the contributions. I plan to use the money that I am going to get to buy the building materials for the construction of the business premise. The shop plus the posho mill is going to be of great benefit to me and the community. I will be able to get income for using in paying for my childrens' school fees since I am a single mother.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they enabled me to achieve my goals. I was able to sit for my final exam and hence I was able to finish college. I was also able to buy a cow with the first transfer, something that I never thought I will be able to own. The lives of the many people in my community were uplifted since most of them were able to do many developments with the transfers such as building new houses and buying livestock. I hence would like to urge them to continue with the same spirit of helping the less fortunate in society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my recent transfer money on paying for my college tuition fee. I still owed the college KES 35000 and this amount was needed urgently so that they could allow me to sit for my final examination. I wasn't able to clear the balance on time since I didn't have the money to do so. My mother used to pay the college fee for me. She had a business of loaning out money to people where they could return it with some interest. Her business, unfortunately, collapsed because someone took some money from her and failed to repay it. Paying the college fees for me hence became a challenge to her. I am so much thankful to GiveDirectly because with their transfer I was able to pay the balance and hence I was allowed to sit for my final exam. I would not have to finish college if it was not for their support. May God bless you abundantly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a great day when I received the transfer not only for me but also for my children who came out of school a little bit earlier eager to confirm whether we also received it. This was after seeing their school cook celebrating his transfer, and with their restlessness in school, the teacher had to release all the children a little bit earlier to celebrate with their parents. It was all joy as everyone knew what we were planning to do with the support we had been expecting.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the heifer I obtained after receiving the first transfer. This is a great joy in my family as it has never been any easier for us to share the milk with my parents that are not always enough. Having to raise our cow at the moment gives me hope of producing even surplus liters to sell in the future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 34000 on my first transfer on obtaining a heifer. I had been fully depending on my parents to give us at least a liter of milk without pay but whenever we fail to secure some, I always buy from the neighborhood since my kids need some every day. I decided to raise a heifer since it won't take long before it calves down to provide us with enough milk that we have always wished for. I also managed to purchased two sacks of beans at KES 10000 as I had secured a tender in school where my elder child had been attending. I was asked to supply beans and buying it from the market is way too cheaper compared with the current cost at school. With the remaining amount, I obtained rice and maize as my household's foodstuff and also new clothing for my children. I am grateful for the support from GiveDirectly and I am looking forward to making great changes in my household with the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I don't have cattle at the moment as I depend on my parents for milk.I will use part of the transfers (350usd) to buy a heifer. When it gives birth, I will sell the milk (0.3usd per litre) and the bulls to earn income that will assist in educating my children.I will also practice poultry farming that will be able to produce eggs and the extra income used on food and to expand my maize business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy in the morning because I am alive and energetic enough to provide food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is my biggest hardship. I am single with 5 children to look after by providing food and education. The income I earn from my teaching professional is not enough to feed my household as well as educate the children. My parents at times assist me but because they are aging ,I feel it's a burden to them.
