How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Now, my biggest priority is making sure my university son can comfortably complete his coursework. He is currently in his first year, and with any luck, he will have a comfortable four years on campus because to the efforts I make. To do this, I have been putting aside money from some occasional side job that I perform at one of the financial institutions in order to see his goal realized.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Kilifi County has faced significant problems related to poverty. I congratulate GiveDirectly on achieving their goal of ending poverty. The location and our living standards have changed as a result of the unconditional transfer. Even though we are not quite where we want to be, we are not the same as we were before GiveDirectly's arrival. Without a doubt, the organization did wonderful work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I sat down to decide how best to spend the second transfer before withholding it. After giving it some thought, I decided to put the entire sum toward my son's schooling because she was starting college. As a peasant farmer, I was unable to take him to the university. I therefore concluded that it was a wise decision to pay the whole sum to the school in order to have enough time to find funding for the subsequent semester's fees. That he is settling in well at the university makes me glad. I was relieved and at ease after doing that.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home making basket out of coconut leaves as it's usually what I do to earn living. I heard a message ringtone and as I always,I called my son to come and check what was it all about because I'm illiterate and couldn't read it on my own. He told me that I had received the transfers and I was so overjoyed and stopped whatever I was doing so that we can go tho the market, withdraw the transfer and use it as it was planned.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I nolonger live in fear as my house is strong enough. We have been able to afford three meals per day compered to previously when we used to have one meal and we are so grateful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been living in a house which is in very bad shape and my fear has been it crumbling at night and being buried inside alive. It's been such a dangerous environment to live in but since I do not earn much from what I do and my sons couldn't afford to build me a house or strength the one that I live in, I had no choice that to live in it in such condition. When I was enrolled into the program, my goal was to strengthen the house with cement and buy enough food to take us for quite a while with my wife. I spend KES 30000 to by cement and pay mason who was doing the work and the balance to buy food. I'm happy that all this was achievable through GiveDirectly transfers and I can't thank you enough for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My family of two has been living in a dilapidated house for five years now. It becomes worse whenever it rains because the roof leaks. Upon receiving this money I plan to renovate the roof and the floor which I believe will make us have a safe place to sleep. I will spend 12000 KES on the renovation. I also plan to buy six goats at a cost 18000 KES which will be a great source of income for my family in future. The rest of the money will be spent on food and school fees for my son who is yet to join college.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I sold 3 goats which I got a total of 6000 KES. I spent the money on buying enough food for the family for two weeks. I also saved 1000 KES for any emergency at home. During that time I had peace of mind and at the same time felt great because I always strive to make sure that my family has enough food and in good health.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Hunger is a big challenge to us as my main occupation of burning charcoal which I only earn peanuts (500 KES weekly). This is not enough to cater for my family all the basic needs. We sometimes go to bed hungry.
