Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can recall that I was in the backyard milking. I heard my phone ringing back in the house where I had left it. When I was done with what I was doing, I reached out to where my phone was. Upon checking, that was when I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. Words cannot explain the immense joy that I felt, I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness. I knew that I would be able to accomplish my goals in a short period. This was a dream come true thus I am forever grateful for the support that uplifted our lives amazingly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to purchase a dairy cow within a short period. This is a big relief because I am hopeful that I would be having sufficient milk for my consumption. Additionally, I was able to purchase two bags of maize which is a rare commodity in the country at the moment. I am forever grateful for the support that uplifted my life amazingly and gave me hope for a better tomorrow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother and a mother of five children. I depend on casual jobs in earning an income though most of the time it's normally not reliable. Receiving money from GiveDirectly was the best opportunity for me to purchase a dairy cow. This is because I depended on milk from the family house which was not enough for us to share daily. Therefore, I used KES 30,000 in purchasing a dairy cow. I then used KES 12,000 in buying two sacks of milk. Additionally, I paid school fees for my children and bought clothes and other foodstuffs with the remaining amount. I am so grateful for the milestones that I have achieved in a short time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will buy land mainly because I am not likely to inherit it from my parents given that I am a single parent. I need to have my property that I can settle my children in. I will spend about KES 100,000 on two points of land and the remaining amount on building a house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I lost my casual job because heavy rains destroyed a bridge that we use to carry river sand to the market. In addition, the river sand became hard to find and so I have stayed out of work for the last six months. I am worried that this will soon lead to my family sleeping hungry if I cannot find a job.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Providing enough food for the household and school fees for my 5 children is a big challenge. I am raising them single handedly yet I rely on casual labour where I make about KES 300 per day.
