How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I have no plans to accomplish; however, I would like to concentrate on livestock farming. I intend to raise a sizable herd of goats for the family's benefit. As the herd grows, I plan to sell some of them to support my family. I will not have to strain as much as I do now to provide for my family as a result of this investment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I believe that a lot of the villagers appreciated the enormous effort that GiveDirectly made to help them escape poverty. Everyone who received the transfer invested in what they most urgently required because it was made plain that it was our obligation to decide how to spend the financial transfers that we received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a long time, I've wanted to invest in livestock. Aside from the goats I already had, I spent $360 from the second transfer on more goats. I chose to invest more in goats because they can withstand our harsh environmental conditions. They not only withstand drought, but they are also inexpensive to buy and maintain, as well as easily convertible to monetary value due to their ready markets, unlike cows. Following my mother's illness, I halted my crop farming plans. I used the remaining funds to transport her to the hospital. I am relieved she's on the mend. I am extremely grateful to GiveDirectly because I do not know how my mother's condition would be today if the transfer had not took place.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As usual, I woke up and left for my daily hustle since I am a casual laborer. Although it was harder for me to take up the day's hustle because I was very hungry since I did not have the privilege of taking some meals the previous evening. Since I had no alternative, I had to force myself to go to the forest to burn some charcoals for sale. On my way, I met my sister who asked whether I had received the promised transfer from GiveDirectly for she had received hers. Illiteracy had delayed me from knowing that information. I gave her my phone to check whether I was also lucky to receive the transfer. Upon checking, she informed me that the money had been sent into my account the previous evening. I was filled with joy for having some money at a time when I needed the most. I changed direction to the nearest Mpesa shop to withdraw some amount for food.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am grateful to GiveDirectly. Sincerely, I cannot tell where I would be now if the organization did not come to my rescue. I guess I would be dead of hunger. GiveDirectly has given me a new hope of living. According to me, life was over since depending on charcoal burning was not reliable again and hunger was almost cutting my breath short. Through GiveDirectly, life has changed for the better. I have been able to start livestock farming as an investment. Through this investment, I will be able to cater to my family's needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing I did was buy some packets of maize flour for my family because we had slept hungry the previous night. Thereafter, I opted to invest in livestock. I bought 7 goats for $210. I chose goats over cows because of the climate condition in our area. Goats can survive in harsh conditions while cows cannot cope. I also bought 7 chickens for $28. These investments are fast selling and they can be easily converted for monetary value when a need arises. After that, I took $100 and paid a dowry for my daughter-in-law.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My last born called Thoya did her class eight final exam last year 2021 and got a calling letter to Langobaya secondary school. Since then, he has never joined the school. I have no source of income and I feel bad to see my son not join secondary school. I will use $300 to buy the uniform and all the required shopping for him to join form one come 2022. I will also use $700 to pay school fees for two years. He is supposed to pay $350 per as school fees. This will make him stay at school and concentrate with his studies. I am happy for the Give directly program.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have a piece of land worth 2.5acres. Over years I have been living without any document to show that I own the land. On June 2022, the national government through the ministry of lands came to hour area and issued title deeds. I felt very happy to get such a noble document for my piece of land. By now the value of my land has increased.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am currently living alone. My wife lives with our children who lives in the Malindi sub-county. I am a farmer doing crop farming and rearing animals. It has been three years now without rain in our village. This caused drought and famine. I had ten cows and they all died due to a lack of water and grass. It happened last year 2022. I am now having a challenge of getting food. I rely on my children and neighbors for food. Food is the current challenge I am facing.
