How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is better now because I have cleared a debt that has enabled me to recover the farm land which was given out as security. This transfer is also going to enable me plaster and cement my house hence making it strong and beautiful. Prior to receiving the transfer, I was hiring farm land. I used to be stressed of how I would get money to clear the debt and plaster my house since the rain was weakening the wall.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well to give us unconditional cash which allowed us to spend it as we wished. Secondly, they did well to caution beneficiaries not to use the money for doing harm in the village for example bewitching others. There is nothing wrong with their work, It is my prayer that GiveDirectly continues to help other people who are poor.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used UGX 1,000,000 for paying off a debt which enabled me to recover my land that I had given out as security to the money lender. I bought 10 bags of cement, a trip of sand , murram and a door that I intend to use for renovating my house. I purchased a bed, a mattress, clothes, food and a solar.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My daily life has greatly changed as I was able to get back my land that I had earlier on given out in exchange for money to build my permanent house. The grass thatched house that I used to stay in had drained me a lot as it needed to be renovated yearly, it leaked, and at one time caught fire. This has given me immense happiness since while mortgaging it, I gave out a bigger part and remained with very small portion to cultivate. Now, I have my whole land to farm in and no worries of hiring extra farm land.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my money, I felt so happy that I made a joyous noise. This is because I had never held such amount of money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer Ugx 1000000 to get back my land that I had given out in exchange for money that I used to build my iron roofed house.
I also bought a door that I had to fit on my house at Ugx 160000.
I then used the balance of my money and bought some house hold items such as a bed, mattress, bed sheets, curtains, utensils, clothes and food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money, my husband and I have resolved to pay back a loan outstanding so that we regain our piece of land that we staked as collateral. This will help us widen our agricultural practices so that we get better yields from what we shall plant. I will also buy some bulls for oxen purposes because we have been hiring from other providers. So this will see us also save money from what we would have used for hiring and channel it into catering for other basic needs like education and medical care.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I wake up well. This the time I plan for the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is lack of money to take proper care of the children. There is no money to cater for their basic needs like proper feeding, education and medical care.
