How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, I intend to continue to support the education of the grandchild. Currently, she is in form 2 and requires my support throughout her education. Additionally, I am planning to continue to refurbish my house by putting doors to the house since it lacks proper doors.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well in supporting the poor household through cash transfers. Through the money, I am glad that it has helped me in constructing a new house and funding the education of my grandchild. I can say everything went on well and there is nothing that they should improve on in their processes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I have been living in a small, grass-thatched structure that was not enough to fully accommodate me and my grandchild plus our household commodities. In most cases, some of the household items were remaining outside because of the condition of our shelter. I had to seek shelter from our neighbours whenever I received visitors in my home which is very shameful. I spent the recent transfer to complete the construction of my two-roomed house that I started with my first transfer. I bought building materials like iron sheets and paid the labour charge. After that, I used $100 to support the education of my granddaughter who is in secondary school. She was left under my care after her all parent died 5 years ago. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to acquire enough food for the family because we did not have food in our stores. Earlier, we could sleep without food for 2 days every week.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was glad when I received a message that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer from GiveDirectly. It was around 4:00 pm when I got an alert but could not understand the content of the message right away. I had to ask around when I heard my neighbors celebrating the receipt as well. I waited for a week before my son came home to help in collecting the moment from the nearby shopping center.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most significant difference in my daily life is the construction of a new house that has given my family a warm and spacious shelter. I am happy that this happened faster than it would have taken with the small income I make from my small-scale farming and livestock rearing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was living in an old structure that was leaking during the rainy season and was glad to receive the first transfer that facilitated the construction of a new one. With the first KES 36000, I purchased 24 iron sheets, woods, and also nails that completed the construction of a new house that we just moved into. We are all glad in my household now that we are not experiencing any drip on the roof during the rainy season. I also spent KES 10000 on school fees for my grandchild and the remaining amount on buying foodstuff for my current family of six. We are all grateful for the support and for working hard to make a lot of changes in my household with the remaining amount.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This will be an opportunity to pay school fees for my granddaughter who is in form one, she finished primary earlier but she stayed out for long because I had no resources, so this now means I have to pay full tuition fees for her to stay and in school and excel. I plan to use the next transfer of 55000 KSH to change my life by gifting myself with a new house which will be a 3 rooms, which will be big house to host many visitors.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Ohhh in October last year, our village was going through a tough period of hunger; our village received relief food(maize and beans) from the government.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees for my granddaughter has been the toughest of all, seeing her at home makes me so sad. I have worked so hard to cut and sell firewood together with charcoal for over 4 years to make savings for her but still it has never been enough. I wish a sponsor would come and take my hand at least, she is the only hope I have in life.i know if she succeeds, chances are my life will take a better turn.
