How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer in that, I have been able to increase my maize production. The transfer enabled me to increase the acreage under maize cultivation, practice timely cultivation and used hybrid seeds. Due to this, I am hopeful if a good harvest that will last us till next harvesting season.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by deciding to totally uplift our lives by giving us lump sum money and I do not see anything that they did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my second transfer, I bought a dairy cow worth KES 35000 as a way of expanding my dairy project. My family will be able to get enough milk for consumption and sale when it reproduces. Also, I spent some amount on farming as it was farming season when I received this money. I hired a tractor for land preparation purposes and bought hybrid maize seeds. I spent the remaining amount on food.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now a happy and contented parent. This is because my children have been able to resume their studies. I had always felt that we had disappointed them as their parents. I am now optimistic that their performance will greatly improve as they will be able to concentrate on their studies. Seeing them continue with their education and get equipped with the skills needed in this dynamic world has always been my prayer so that they will not live a life full of sufferings and uncertainities like mine.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning after waking up when I realized that GiveDirectly had sent me the promised money. At that instant, my heart was filled with happiness. I knew that my children would be able to go back to school and continue with their education.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
When I received my first transfer, I spent KES 20000 from it to pay school fees for my children. This was my top priority since I have always wanted the best for them. They had stayed at home for some time due to the arrears I was owing to the school. Due to this, their performance had greatly been affected negatively. Also, I bought a heifer using part of the remaining amount. When it reproduces, I will be using the money I will be getting through the sale of milk to pay school fees for my children. I used the remaining amount to buy a door to fix in our house and repaired a motorcycle that had stayed for long without being in use by buying the required spare parts.

Receiving this money means i will be able to pay next year's schoolfees for my two children without much struggle like usual. The remaining part of my transfer to go to buying two calves which will act as savings so i can sell them whenever there is any emergency needing money, moreso schoolfees
What is the happiest part of your day?
I always spend my day in the morning and afternoon keeping myself busy in the garden weeding vegetables, beans and maize especially during this rainy season where weeds grow fast. Reuniting with my family in the evening is the happiest part of my day when my children are back home from school and my spouse too is back from work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My spouse who is the bread winner of our family is a motorbike rider whose job ain't reliable since he depends on being called upon by his friends who engage in the same job to ride their motorbikes whenever they are commited elsewhere. Due to this, he struggles alot providing for the family. I have always wished to start up an income generating activity so that i can support him financially but this has proven hard due to lack of capital. This is the biggest hardship we face in our family.
