How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Presently, I feel so proud of my self for the greatest step I have made which is to purchase heifers for rearing. In my life, I never imagined that I would own any livestock in my life because I couldn't afford such things considering my meagre earnings. I don't have a reliable source of income and what I normally get is usually spent on food. I feel proud of myself because there is the hope of growing economically and becoming a better person through the livestock which I ha now have.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
My village was amongst the poorest in the whole area and thanks to Give Directly for selecting our village to benefit from this programme. Almost every household managed to get the transfers which they spent wisely as per their needs. On the other hand, I never saw anything which the organization never did well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
The second transfers which I received I spent part of it on buying furniture and bedding all of which I didn't have before Give Directly came to our village. The remaining portion I spent on buying three heifers to add to one which I had bought with the first transfers. I also bought two goats. I invested in livestock so that in future I would have a reliable source of income when the animals have started producing milk.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Before GiveDirectly came to my village, I used to live in a one-room grass thatched house. This is now in the past as I have been able to build a bigger iron sheet-roofed house. This so far makes my daily life different from how it was before.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I woke up in the morning and realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I was so happy since I had never handled such a huge amount of money before. I informed my family who in turn was so happy to hear of the good news. We then sang some praise songs and prayed to thank God for His mercies. My daughter then reminded me that this money was non-refundable and this made me more happier as I will never have to worry on how to repay them.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used to live in a one-room grass-thatched house. Due to continuous drought experienced in our area, finding grass to replace the worn out ones has been a great challenge. This prompted me to use part of my first transfers in building an iron-sheet roofed house which is a little bit bigger than the former one. I also used the remaining amount in buying a cow as this will help me save the money I usually use in buying milk and use them on other things.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money is a real blessing to me and my family. We've been living in this hut for long together with our children and they had to go sleep in a neighbours' house but now i will be able to build another house so that our children will have a better place to sleep. I am really grateful .
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when i know that my family have had something to eat during the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
This year we have not had a major challenge unlike last year when we had no food to eat. My wife had to travel far looking for firewood to sell so that we could get some amount to buy maize to feed the family. That was really hard for us but we thank God that we overcame it and now that Givedirectly is here, we can keep our smiles knowing that there is a better future.
