How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have noticed that I spend a lot of money because I have been leasing a motorbike to transport my goods from the wholesalers to my retail store. I want to get my motorbike so that I can use it to transport goods to my shop as a result. I will have decreased the expenses I have been accumulating by doing this. I intend to complete this task before the year is over, as per my plan.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I will always be appreciative of the help that significantly raised my standard of living. Without asking for anything in return, GiveDirectly has significantly affected my life. I have not observed anything that is not done properly because the company is well organized in how they carry out their task. It made it possible for me to have a toilet, which has shielded me from unneeded illness epidemics.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I opted to build a toilet. I operate a shop business at my place and it has been a shame to direct customers to a nearby bush for nature calls. Leave alone customers, I used to wait till it was dark for me to go out in the nearby bushes for nature calls. This was not only shameful but also unhygienic. Therefore, I bought 20 bags of cement for $140, paid the contractor a labor charge of $180, and seven pieces of iron sheets for $67. As of now, we are happy that we have a toilet at home not only to avoid shame from visitors and customers but also to prevent ourselves from some outbreaks of diseases. Thereafter, I paid $15 school fees for my three primary school children. I also bought some clothes for my family and used the rest to upkeeping my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It must have been between 4 and 5 o'clock in the evening and I was going about my daily household activities when I received the text message confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I knew that my plans and aims would be fulfilled, especially building a room extension as well as digging and constructing a better toilet pit. I was happy when I received my transfer because my local retail kiosk raised insufficient income which mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs but could not help me to address these issues.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I got the assistance I needed to build a room extension for my business which will potentially lead to an increase in the profits. We will also get the respect we deserve as a homestead when my toilet is finally constructed and ready for use because we have been a subject of gossip in the village as the homestead that still practices open defecation which is so humiliating and shameful. I would also be able to look at and improve any other part of my home, with part of this transfer, so that we can always be respected like any other homestead.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am planning to spend all the transfer o received on building a room extension for my business as well as dig and construct a proper toilet pit. For this room extension, it will create more space for my business which will mean that the business will expand and subsequently more profits which makes me feel so good and better. For this toilet pit, I needed a proper toilet because until recently, we have been still practicing open defecation and relied on the bushes around to relieve ourselves or at times having to dig in the ground to create a makeshift pit latrine. This used to be very shameful to me and I was even afraid of receiving guests because whenever one needs to relieve themselves then that would be a huge problem and headache to me. However, with the coming of GiveDirectly to our village and getting me to be enrolled into the program, I feel so good that I will soon have my own better toilet and quit open defecation in the bushes. It is a very huge relief to me that I am no longer worried about receiving guests and them needing somewhere to relieve themselves which makes me so happy, all thanks to GiveDirectly

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a businesswoman who runs a shop in our village. The shop currently has a stock worth KES 100,000, with this amount I can make a profit of KES 50,000. My ambition has been to add more stock but due to insufficient funds, this dream has never come to pass. I am planning to spend KES 80,000 on the addition. This will generate income for my family of 6 members. Other than that, I am scheming to spend the remaining amount to build a modern toilet for my family. Currently, we are using temporary ones made from poles and I feel they are not safe for my small children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a businesswoman and a Poultry farmer who keeps Guinea fowls. It has been one year since I started the guinea project but had not benefited from them. Last month, I received a call from someone in town and he was interested to purchase them at once. This was a miracle to me because I managed to make KES 10,000 as a profit in a single day. This brought happiness to my life and family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I am currently facing is a small number of customers for my business. This is due to the prolonged drought which has affected the work of the most of villagers. They depend on substance farming and livestock. Sometimes my stock can last for 2 months which is different from before.
