Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On December 10, 2021, I went to the bush to do some work, upon my return, I heard some people shouting in our town with joy and I was wondering about what was going on; then I heard one of them saying "I have received money from GiveDirectly on my mobile money account", I hurryingly open my phone to check my mobile money account. After checking the account, I knew that I have also received money from GiveDirectly on my account, I was happy that day for the help given to me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
When I lost my business, I decided to do some hard bush work in order to raise more money for my business, tho I knew it was stressful for me but I didn't had any choice because that was the only thing I could think of doing inorder to survive; but since GiveDirectly came to help us, I have reduced the kind of hard work that I was doing in the bush, I am now more relaxed waiting for my remaining transfers so that I can go back to my business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Few years ago, I was an established businessman but due to some problems, I lost my business and stated doing some bush work in order to help me raise money again, but now that GiveDirectly has blessed me with this transfer, I have decided to go back to being a businessman again. What does receiving this money mean to you?
If I am successful to receive the cash transfer, I will invest it into business. When establish the business and is going well, then I will continue my education at the highest level. The business I decided to do is to buy sticks( round poles) , take it to Monrovia and sell. I decided this type of business because lot of people are not engaged in it here. Besides, it is fast going; and is not something that somebody will credit or eat. I have anticipated long time to do this business, but I have not had the amount of cash to do that now. Although last year, I had some cash, however, I used all on my school fees because I never had any body to support me while in 12th grade . My both parents that supposed to help, none of them had the means( cash). Although I have planned that this dry see I get engage into coal production so that I sell and raise money for that business I have planned to do. However, it will be a great opportunity for me if GD send the money promised me before that time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Yes, I was very happy on last July 26th which was Liberia independent day. Not just because of it been our independent day, but during that day, my friends that they and I graduated from high school together came with gifts unknown to me that day in my home here and spent that entire day with me. That day I was very happy because it shows to me how important am I to them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge here is how to raise money to do what I want to do. I considered money as a major challenge because, all of what what one to do including business, have to do with money. Also, not having money was one of the reasons my former partner ( spouse) left me for another man. The coal work I am engaged in presently to be able to raise money, the price has dropped because there are lot of people engaged in it these days. As the result, I do too much hard work associated with the coal production, but I don't realise much money in return compared to the money and time I invest. Although my former partner leaving me brought some setback because she left a young child here with me that I am taking care of. However, her leaving have given me more strength to get engage into activities that will earn me money.
