How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I was able to construct a proper shelter for the family. I am now living in a comfortable house with the kids. Most importantly, I was able to seek medical care with the transfer and I am recovering well after the treatment. Being sick I was not able to work and the transfer has been of a great help since I was able to purchase enough food.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I thank GiveDirectly for sending the cash transfer which has enabled me to seek proper medical care and constructed a decent shelter. In addition, the officers trained us on how to spend the money wisely and every household is being followed up to make sure that the transfer has impacted our lives positively.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a very long time I have been suffering from a backbone growth. I had received referral to seek special medication but I lack adequate finances to paying the the expense as well as transportation to and from the hospital. After receiving the second transfer I spent $200 to seek proper medical care. Currently, I am healing well after undergoing treatment. In addition, I purchase 16 iron sheets, building poles and timber for the construction of a new house since the one I had was very small and it was leaking during the rain season. I used the remaining amount to purchase adequate food stock because I am no longer working due to the sickness.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a message on my phone early that morning. I was already in my farm planting. I was hesitant to check it thinking it might be the usual promotional messages from Safaricom. When I finally checked who the sender was, I could not hold the joy that I felt! I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I thanked them for fulfilling their promise to me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through this transfer, I built a new iron roofed house to live with my family. My old living house was in a pathetic condition. It would leak uncontrollable whenever it rained and I was not in a position to even renovate it. It's through the transfer that I purchased enough building materials such as iron sheets, nails and building poles and constructed the new house. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because without them, I would not have managed to build my new house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger portion of the first transfer on buying building materials that include iron sheets, nails and building poles in order to construct a new house. I had built my previous house with some used pieces of iron sheets that I had borrowed from my neighbours. They would leak whenever it rained and I had to seek shelter from a neighbour during such times. I am at peace now having built a new house for my family. I also paid for the cost of labour. In addition, I also bought two goats on the amount that remained after building the house. I am expecting these goats to reproduce and increase in number. I can rely on them for my future financial needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live in a very small house that serves as the bedroom and the kitchen. This makes it very hot especially during the day and I cannot even rest inside it. Besides this, the roof is damaged and I spend my nights shifting from one corner to the other during rainy season. Because of its small size, I end up spending the whole night seated on one corner till the rain ceases. Receiving this money therefore means building a better house that will bring comfort in my life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening after accomplishing all my daily duties. I use this time to stroll and visit my friends for a chitchat. Their presence gives me joy as we remind ourselves the good old days of our youth.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of enough money is my biggest hardship. This is because I depend on charcoal burning for a living, a job that earns me 600 shillings a month. I am not so productive because of its cumbersome nature as it has negative impacts on my health. This is the reason why I have not been able to construct a good house when my house collapsed 3 years ago.
