How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has really improved since I received the money. If it was not for the money I would not be having the motorcycle that I bought with the Give Directly transfers. The income I earn from it has enabled me to meet most of my family's needs and currently I don't struggle as much as I used to previously .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly does well especially by giving people cash. This has really empowered people and majority were able to achieve their dreams. On the hand, all they do is good and there is no area of improvement. They should continue with the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought a second hand motorcycle with the first transfer but it needed a lot of services to be done for it to operate. When I received the second transfer, I spent it on servicing the the motorcycle. I am glad it is now in good condition and working well. Since we walk for many kilometres in search of water, the motorcycle has come in handy for fetching water both for domestic and livestock use. I also earn income from it since I operate it for taxi services too. Besides that, my children who are in primary school owed the school a huge fee balance so I cleared the balance with part of the second transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the notification early in the morning. On checking to confirm the contents of the message, I was overwhelmed with joy when I realised it was an mpesa message. I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was excited to receive such a financial help.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a motorbike through the transfer. I mainly depend on casual jobs to earn a living thus having this motorbike is an additional source of income. Apart from providing taxi services at a fee, I am using this to sell and supply water in our region at a fee. We have been hit by a crisis shortage of water which forces us to walk over long distances to carry water. In such instances, I have to use the motorbike to sell and supply water at a fee thus earning an income .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I acquired a secondhand motorbike to help me in providing taxi services in our region and earn an income. I am a single parent and I depend on casual jobs to take care of my children. Having the motorbike is an additional source of income. Through the income from it, I have been able effectively fulfil my family's basic needs like buying daily foodstuffs. Our area is also faced with a water shortage. Through the motorbike, I have been supplying and selling water in our villages at a fee, thus earning an income in the process. I took the small portion of the transfer that remained to clear the school fees for my son.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My biggest ambition is to educate my children to a level where they can be able to secure good jobs. I wouldn't want them to end up hustling like me due to lack of education. Since this money will not be enough to sustain their learning, I will use it to start a shop business in my village. This is because I was once employed as a shopkeeper and I have enough expertise to run a shop. I will ensure I save the income from the business to cater for their education among other needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when I am resting and listening to radio. My favorite station is Lulu FM because it airs biblical preachings that really encourage me. I feel at peace during this time as I tend to forget all my problems.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife succumbed to breast cancer in 2017 and left our 5 young kids under my care. Life has never been easy balancing parental duties and looking for jobs to sustain my family. This has made it impossible to earn enough money because sometimes I even skip jobs to attend to their affairs. I can therefore say, losing my wife is the biggest hardship that I have never been able to recover from the trauma.
