How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My living standards have improved. I no longer strain to provide food for my family as before the transfers. I managed to buy a few sacks of maize and also used hybrid seeds and fertilizer on my farm which definitely will improve my harvest from the usual 3 sacks. This will ensure food security in my house and use the little I get on other family needs. I also didn't struggle much to pay school fees for my children as it was the case before GD came to my life. Since my family depended on my small income from casual work, I could not manage to meet all our needs in time through my income hence my children would be sent home regularly due to huge fees balance they had in school. Since I used the transfers to clear their fees arrears, they have never been sent home again for fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I don't see what GD has not done well. Most people in this village have improved their living standards as a result of these transfers. We now own assets that we couldn't have bought if we only depended on our meagre income. I pray that God blesses this organization so that they continue helping other people in other regions the way they helped us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my recent transfers to do some shopping for my child who joined form one recently. I also paid part of his school fees using the transfers. This money came just at the right time because I couldn't have managed to do all these at once considering my unstable source of income from casual work. Apart from that, I also paid fees for my son who is in college and I replaced my old torn bedding. I used to sleep on a mat and cover myself with thin and torn blankets. After getting these transfers and buying new ones, I can now sleep peacefully since I bought nice blankets and sheets. I no longer feel cold at night. I also added a few utensils. I used the remaining amount of money to buy three sacks maize.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the house that I have been able to build with the transfers that I have received from GiveDirectly. I never thought I could build this house anytime soon, at least not when I depend on casual jobs that earns me hardly enough to put food on the table for my family. On top of that, I was able to remain with additional money that enabled me pay school fees for one of my children who was joining secondary school. I feel so proud of my achievements as a parent and happy as well because of the support that I received from GiveDirectly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was in the wee hours of the night when I received money from GiveDirectly and I couldn't believe in my eyes. I stood still for a moment as I tried to internalize this before I could finally accept that I had indeed received the money as promised earlier. I then got down to planning and prioritizing on what I was expected to do to reap maximumly from the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used part of my recent transfer to build a new house for my children and used the remaining amount to pay school fees for my child who was joining secondary school. My children were suffering a lot going to the neighbor's place to sleep over and I had really looked forward to getting enough money that would enable me build a house for them. Receiving this transfer meant that their dreams were going to be realized. I also remained with enough amount for paying school fees and one of my children who just joined secondary school benefited as well. Once I get my second transfer, I will use it to pay school fees for my children and give them a chance to concentrate on their studies without interference.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My first plan when I receive this money is buying a dairy cow.I see a lot of benefits in a cow.First is milk for consumption and the other is satisfying the family's needs including paying school fees.If I sell 5 litres a day,I will be able to save enough to pay school fees and buy clothes for my children.I will also save the cost of buying 1 litre of milk daily(0.3 USD).I currently don't own a cow.The cow will cost me around Ksh 30,000(300 USD).I also have a school fees burden especially when school re open in January. One of my children will be joining secondary school while I have another is going on with his college studies. The money from Give Directly will help me so much.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a casual labourer my day is never an easy one. This is because I do physical jobs like weeding and ploughing. It's always a relief when the sun goes down since it's usually a show of time to relax. This is usually the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have eight children and raising them up has been my biggest hardship. My last born is 8 years old while my first born is 23 years old.I have to struggle a lot because I want to see them through their education.Paying school fees for them has been the biggest headache.I depend on casual jobs which earn me 2-3 USD in a day;same to my spouse. This is barely enough to fully cater for all the family's needs.
