How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was sheltering in a small house which was temporary. During the rainy seasons, I used to be rained on and I had to seek shelter from neighbors. Thus after receiving my transfer, I decided to renovate it and it's now iron roofed and spacious and it can now accommodate all my family members. Courtesy of GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done so well in my village by giving us the money unconditionally. This has made us access some permanent shelter, owning some livestock and many more projects. In addition, we were well taught on how best we could utilize our many accordingly.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on some beddings such as a bed, mattress and some new bedsheets with a total of 12000. I then bought a few building materials such as iron sheets at KES 10000 for the renovation of my house which was in a poor condition. The remaining amount of money I bought some enough foodstuffs for my family that would take us to the next harvesting season.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was previously sheltering in a small house, though I had desired to upgrade to a better and decent house, I could not accomplish this at my own cost. However, when I received my first transfer, my desire was finally fulfilled because I managed to purchase adequate building materials which include iron sheets, nails, timber and building poles to facilitate this. I am now living comfortably in my new house, courtesy of GiveDirectly. I also paid for the mason for his job. Having a new spacious and decent house is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by a message notification on my phone. On checking the contents, I realized that I had received my first transfer as promised by GiveDirectly. I was greatly overjoyed since receiving this transfer meant that my life would be transformed completely.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of the transfer on purchasing adequate building materials which include pieces of iron sheets, timber, nails and building poles to facilitate the construction of a new spacious house. Previously I was sheltering in a small house and my desire was to upgrade to a better house. I am now happy that through this money, I managed to complete the construction of my new house. I also paid the mason for his job. In addition to this, I also bought a cow at KES 19000. Initially I had none, and I consider myself lucky owning this cow. I am expecting to benefit from the milk that this cow will be producing and I can even sell the surplus to earn some cash. Lastly, I also bought foodstuffs for my family and paid for some household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My desire is too see my children financially stable. They struggle a lot working odd jobs at construction sites to make sure there is food on our table. I therefore plan to spend only a small fraction of the transfers to complete construction of my house and give the rest to them so they can start various businesses to create income. My upkeep of food, clothing, medication etc will be catered for by these incomes as we have agreed.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when my children come home from work. I prepare their dinner and serve them which they eat heartily. It gives me so much pleasure to do this small thing for them as they are out there toiling to make sure we have a meal at the end of day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our biggest hardship is insufficient finances to meet our needs of food, housing etc with much ease. I am a widow with absolutely no source of income, only depending on my children who do odd jobs at construction sites in Bamba center. With as little pay as 2 dollars a day, nothing much can be achieved.
