How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I now want to open a store where I will sell stuff that sells quickly, like food and clothing. After observing that we must go a considerable distance to reach some stores, I came up with this proposal. There are only two unreliable stores in the entire hamlet since their owners do not have enough money to adequately fund them. Once I get the business going, I'm confident that it will help me support my family and pay for my kids' college education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I was able to comprehend the straightforward information provided by GiveDirectly, which gave us detailed instructions on how to complete each step of the enrollment process and accept both transfers. Even if any homes were excluded, they would always ask for and be given a clear explanation based on the stringent rules that the officers were at the time following. Because they showed respect to everyone in the community via their words and deeds, the officers were competent and professional in their work. The project was well received by all, therefore nothing has to be amended going forward.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I built a house using the initial transfer, but I was unable to finish the roofing because I was out of money to pay the labor costs. I decided to finish the roofing after receiving the second transfer because I had all the necessary materials. As a result, my labor costs for the roofing were only $50. I then decided to make a livestock investment. I spent $480 to purchase 12 goats based on this. This was a large outlay because I am aware that purchasing livestock provides stability for my children's future schooling. If I ever need to sell something to cover my children's school expenses, I will be in a better position to do so because goats have accessible markets.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9:30 am I was on my way home from fetching water from a nearby water pan in our village. I received a message alert on my phone. I had carried 20 liters of water on my head hence l did not bother checking my phone until I reached home. I did not believe what I saw on my phone after checking the message. It was the transfer from GiveDirectly which they promised us during the enrollment stages. I felt very happy and thanked the organization for the aid since I had a lot of plans to accomplish in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently residing in a decent spacious shelter for the family. This has restored the peace of mind that I had lost due to the conditions of my house. Currently, my girls do not need to walk at night because seek shelter. I am staying with them under the same roof and no longer worried about their safety at night.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I have desired to construct a decent house for the family since the one I had was very small to fully accommodate my family of 9 members. My 3 grown-up daughters had to seek refuge from my neighbours every night some of that worried me a lot since they had to walk at night in the darkness. After receiving my transfer, I spent most of it to construct a 2 roomed decent house for my family which cost KES 37,000 in total. In addition, I used 3,000 to clear the fees arrears for my children. Furthermore, I used KES 8,800 to purchase proper bedding for the family we were using sacks as bedding which was not comfortable. I use the remaining amount to purchase 3 goats school for the children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means starting a business ( shop). This has been my longing but due to financial constraints, this dream has never come to pass. I am planning to spend 30,000 Kenya shillings to start it. This is going to generate income to my family of 9 members. In a day I can make at least 500 shillings as profits. This is enough to cater for all the basic needs such as food because we always spend 200 shillings only. Also I will save the extra amount for my children's future education. Other than that,I will spend the remaining amount to build a spacious house which can accommodate all of us and leave comfortable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon because this is the time I have completed most of household chores and I have time to rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Securing a sustainable job has been the biggest hardship in my life. I have a family size of 7 children and I only depend on my small business of selling cassavas at our local market. From my sales, I earn an average of 1000 shilling which is not enough to cater for the family's food as well as their education.
