How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always had plan of buying land so that I could move to and farm during the rainy season since I had none on my own. Plus if I had my own farm then I could manage to plants crops and sustain myself and my family with matters concerning nutrition. My first born son who happens to be a driver was planning to assist me in buying the farm so he had deposited KES 40,000 to the owner while we looked for more money to clear the debt and own our own piece of land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I ma so grateful to GiveDirectly because through its programs and the funds I received I managed to be a step closer to being a land owner something that I had craved for the longest time but was financially crippled. Apart from that, were it not for the funds I have no idea if my son would have got the medical attention he required. I am loss for words but I am eternally humbled by your gratitude and kindness and I hope you touch as many people and souls just like you managed to touch mine. I have yet to witness any downfall to this program.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the first transfers I took all the money I received and paid it all to the farm owner so that we would be closer to clearing the debt and be a step closer to owning our land. I had planned to completely clear the debt using second transfers after I received them but unfortunately a dark cloud crept upon us and unfortunately my son who I depended on mostly got involved in a gruesome car accident and his legs were almost damaged completely. He relied on driving to take care of me and his family needs especially since my husband passed away and he was the breadwinner of his family. His legs were almost completely squashed and after seeking medical advice they advised for an amputation. Luckily we got introduced to another doctor who worked at a private hospital who insisted that amputation was not necessary and that he will help my son keep his legs. He was our saving grace because indeed he kept his promise. I coughed up KES 30,000 for my sons treatment but if you ask me it was all worth it because he still kept his life and his legs. After that I went ahead and used the rest of the money which was about KES 22,000 to pay the debt in the land that we planned to acquire being even another step closer to being the owner.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the hospital nursing my son who was involved in a road accident that left him with his both legs broken. I remember it was around 8 am when I had finished giving breakfast to my sick child when I received the messages from GiveDirectly. My child verified the phone and informed me that I had received the transfer which I was promised by GiveDirectly. I was so happy for receiving my transfer since I was eagerly awaiting for it to settle the medical bills.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Seeing my children faring well after he underwent proper medical care give me peace of mind. This is because I was stranded on what to do since I did not money to settle the medical bills. Furthermore, I am currently owning a piece of land where I stay without dispute with anybody.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the bigger part of my transfer in paying the medical bills of my child who was involved in a road accident that left him with both legs broken. He was admitted to a private hospital with huge medical bills. I was stranded on what to do since I did not have money to settle the medical bills. I spent KES 30,000 in payment of the bills, at the moment he is feeling well something that has restored my happiness. Furthermore, I spent KES 20,000 to purchase a piece of land this is because the place where I am living currently has some conflict something that kept me worried that something bad might happen. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food for my family and fare to and from the hospital.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My son has been in hospital unattended for the last four months. Having been engaged in a road accident, his limb completely broke. So, receiving the money will help me foot in for his medical expenses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happiest in the morning when chatting with my friends. They make me to temporarily forget the struggles I go through because of my son's ailment.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When my husband died, my son took up the responsibility to look after me. However, since my son was engaged in the road accident, I have had a challenge to sustain myself. I am jobless, elderly but at the same time, I am obligated to take care of my son's medical expenses as well as my food for survival. So, this is my biggest hardship.
