How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to outfit my grocery store. The business isn't particularly steady right now, but I want to buy more inventory so that retailers will be able to buy from me. The objective is to act as both the village's and adjacent communities' main source for all small groceries. I'm hoping I can accomplish this utilizing the savings from my business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
All I can say is that GiveDirectly is by far the most giving company I have ever dealt with. Many people provide assistance, but very few do it in a way that makes the recipients feel like they have some influence over their future. In order to finish the numerous efforts they started with the money already obtained, I would encourage them to keep up the good work, add recipients, and also think about continuing to help those they already have.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On the withdrawal day, I bought a sack of maize for $60. This was the first thing I did because hunger had struck us and drought had no mercy on us. I am happy because my family got some food which took them some time and rested from the tiring casual jobs. Since I already had some cows, I bought four goats for $130. I also bought 18 pieces of iron sheets for $171 to renovate the whole roof of my house because is leaking. Thereafter I bought a solar panel for $150 to provide light at my home. I did this because it was too expensive to buy paraffin every day. As of now my children happily conduct their evening studies unlike before. In addition, I bought four plastic chairs because I had only one chair at home. This was shameful once I receive visitors and I had to borrow from neighbors or offer the visitors some logs to seat on. I saw it prudent to keep the remaining amount for the family's use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
For a while, I had been hosting a friend in my house, and on this day, I had just woken up and saw a message. since I could not read it, I asked her to do it instead.  She confirmed that it was a message from give directly. I then called my husband to share the great news with him. We both rejoiced and 3 days later, he came back home so we could plan the way forward. My very first thought was to buy some iron sheets to repair the roof of my three-roomed house, the one I had had holes and would leak whenever it rains
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There has been a great difference in my life ever since I started receiving funds from give directly. My husband's job as a builder is very inconsistent and there are times when he would even go a month without earning a dime. This would force me to farm for others and in a day, I would make around KES 100 to help us get by. Now with these funds, we have plenty of food in my house. Other than my children being in school, I have also started the renovation of my house and I also have plans of starting a grocery store business. We are more comfortable than before
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the money to buy 8 iron sheets to repair the roof of my house which would leak whenever it rains. In addition to this, my three children had school fees arrears of KES 4500, using the funds I paid KES 3500. I then went ahead to buy them some books as they were transitioning to their various classes. Whatever amount remained, I utilized part of it to buy some nourishment for my family and then saved the rest intending to gather enough funds to start a grocery store business to boost the few earnings my husband gets as a builder.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As a family we agreed on rearing goats as a main business for the family, we have three children who are school going and we know that at some time it would be tough to educate them without any financial support. So we agreed to have few animals that we can rear and sell whenever we will be having emergencies. After the last drought season few months ago we realized a lot of of us lost cows who couldn't stand harsh weather while goats survived. Therefore upon receiving the first transfer of 55000 KSH we plan to buy 5 Galla goats which one cost around 10,000 KSH and use the rest of transfer to build their resting area, and save for other emergencies like their treatment. We hopeful when they mature we can sell one at 15,000 KSH to 20,000 KSH which is very profitable considering not many people rear that breed of goats.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Seeing my other children healthy gives me a lot of satisfaction and am grateful that they can attend school every day and perform exemplary.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Every month I have to take my son for checkup, he has chest complications and we have walked in and out of hospitals, and doctors can't find the diagnosis. We spend over 3000 KSH for hospital visits without counting on food and transport and most of the times we are pressure to sleep in hotel so we can wake up early for appointments.
