How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After starting dairy farming with my transfers, the goals that I have this year are to boost dairy and crop farming. Currently, I grow maize on 1.2 acres of land for commercial purposes and our consumption. At the moment, we are entering the harvest period in two weeks. I expect to get around sixteen bags of maize and plan to sell ten bags and use the money to purchase another dairy cow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in helping the needy households in the community. Visiting everyone and enrolling them without demanding any payment is what they did. Additionally, because of the high cost of living, it was hard to get such a huge amount of money. I feel that there is nothing that they should do better during the enrollment and follow-up calls.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on crop farming as a dependable source of livelihood for the family. I have desired to venture into dairy farming to supplement my earnings from crop farming. After receiving the recent transfer, I used $270 to purchase one crossed-high-breed dairy cow. Because crossed dairy cows can withstand harsher weather conditions compared to pure dairy cows. At the moment, I am glad that it is about to give birth in the next two months. Once it reproduces, I will have a steady milk supply for the family and sell some to earn extra income. I am also planning to sell the offspring to support my children's education. Currently, the elder son will join junior secondary school next year. Furthermore, I used the remaining amount to purchase new furniture, including a sofa set and a table. Previously, we were using plastic chairs that were not comfortable.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, It was early in the morning when I was at home enjoying a cup of tea together with my family. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing and vibrating, On checking what the message was all about, I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I could not believe what I had seen, this was the happiest day of my life. I then informed my wife and my brother who were equally excited and happy. We then sat as a family and embarked on planning how best we would utilize our funds.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly has been of ultimate blessing in our lives. I was able to uplift my living standard within a short period. With the dairy cow that I bought, I can cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. GiveDirectly has empowered the lives of many thus we are forever grateful for the support that brought a positive change in our society as a whole.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I was full of happiness because I knew that God had answered our prayers. This is because I had always wanted to purchase a dairy cow but I was unable due to financial constraints. Thus I saw this as a golden opportunity for me to acquire one. I am a consistent farmer and a businessman, married with four children. Therefore I used KES 18,000 in paying for a dairy cow that I had booked before but I had not paid for it fully. I then paid school fees arrears of KES KES 3300 and used KES1650 on farming. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on clothes and foodstuffs. I am so happy for the support that lifted my living standard to a higher level in society.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Milk is in high demand in our area making dairy farming profitable and a stable source of income to many families in our area. This is pressuring me to venture into the business but capital has been my biggest setback. I work casually in construction sites to earn a living. I earn about 300 daily which is not sufficient for us. With this money, I will set aside KES 80000 to buy a dairy cow and paddock my farm. This will enable me to harvest enough pasture for my livestock. I will then use the remaining money to buy farm inputs such as fertilizers and certified maize seeds. This will enable produce more food for my family and avoid perennial food shortages.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My wife completed her Early Childhood Education course in the last six months. This made me catch a breath now that I was supporting her education. This relieved me from the struggle of finding school fees. This made me feel happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I do not have a stable source of income, this is making it hard for me to support my family's needs such as food, clothing, and even paying family bills. I usually earn about KES 300 from my job which is not enough to budget for family needs. Above all, food is being sold at exorbitant prices in our area. This makes life even harder.
