What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
With about $1 I make from the firewood I sell everyday, my children have never had a decent meal for a long time. When I receive money from GiveDirectly, I would like to buy food($70) enough to last my family of 6 for about two months. I also wish to spend $100 to start a small food kiosk business just outside my home so I cannot rent a premise. This business will make sure I continue to provide for my family in the years to come.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my children got a casual job to become a house help in a nearby town. Although she doesn't make much, she surprises me with about $10 each month. This money buys food for my other children, which makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Collecting firewood for sale is not my dream job. But unfortunately,it is my everyday job. I go into thickets from where I collect firewood that earns me about $1 each day. With 5 children to feed, we have had to contend with two and sometimes one meal a day, for a long time. Two of my older children have already dropped out of school to find casual jobs to sustain themselves since I could not give them the life they desire. My worry is that the rest could follow in their unfortunate footsteps.
