How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new objective is to purchase livestock, particularly goats. I decided on goats over cows since they can go longer without water than cows. I will be able to support my children's education with this investment. Goats are a good investment since they are easy to keep, have a high market value due to their affordability, and may be sold at any moment if a need arises.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thank you so much for your generosity, GiveDirectly. In fact, I have nothing to grumble about. Thanks to GiveDirectly, I now own a home even though I didn't have one before. At least I now have a house and merely need to finish it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After utilizing the first transfer, my house collapsed halfway after a tree fall on it. It was a tough time for me but I am glad through the second transfer I was able to construct a two-room mud-walled house. I bought 14 pieces of iron sheets for $151 and building poles and rafters for $100. The contractor's cost was $100. Currently, I am settled since I have a nice and secure house, thanks to GiveDirectly. I also bought two sacks of maize for $69. I opted for this to ensure there is food security at home for my family of eight bearing in mind that we were going through a drought season. Since my six children are still students, I paid $30 examination fees at their elementary school. Since life is full of ups and downs, I decided to save the remaining amount for emergencies.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still recall very well I was with my colleague at exactly 7 in the morning when I saw the message notifications. Without wasting time, I decided to check where the texts were coming from. I was overwhelmed with happiness after realizing that it was from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received my first cash transfer. I couldn't hold my joy, I even requested my friend to continue with the day's program as I rush back home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to purchase the piece of land in the neighbouring village. I am also planning to construct a new house on this plot because the previous one was not spacious enough and I had constructed it in my parent's compound. I divorced my spouse six years ago and I had to return to my maternal home together with my five children. Ever since I have been raising them single handedly. With the charcoal business which was not profitable, I had to endure all the troubles. I also felt there was a need to have my compound so that my kids can have a place they can refer to as home. I am happy this was a success and very soon we will be relocating to the new compound. My mind is now at peace and hopeful in life knowing very well I will no longer suffer like before, especially during the rainy seasons.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For so many years I have been yearning to construct a new house since the initial one was just a small but which was almost collapsing due to its condition. Therefore I bought the following building materials, iron sheets at KES 26160, nails at KES 1500 and building poles at KES 4000. To add to that I cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my five children who are all in primary schools. Paying fees for them has always been a major challenge to me and they were always at home as a result. I am happy that they have been able to continue with their studies without any hiccups. also, I purchase a piece of land on credit whereby I am planning to relocate to the new one since I am now at my maternal home. With the amount of money, I have been buying foodstuffs and other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
First of all, the condition my children and I live in is laughable. Look at my house! It is smaller than a washroom. How five of my children fit in there at night remains a miracle. I am a single mother, lucky enough to have been given some space to put up this shack in my father's compound. I live for the day when my children will sleep comfortably. I hope to use my transfers to build a three-roomed house and at least buy two beds and mattresses. I know this would be a long shot but I plan to split the money accordingly. You don't know how happy I am, just thinking about the comfort we shall experience.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Recently, I started working at the mines. Although it's not a permanent job, I am glad to be out of home every once in a while. It gives me time to myself, I clear my head and come back ready to take care of my children without feeling overwhelmed.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
For some reason, my entire family is taking turns with illnesses. If one of my children is not down with the flu, the other is nursing malaria, migraines, typhoid you name it. I wonder if this is normal and I hope we overcome it.
