How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I am planning to build my own house and move in once it's complete. This is because I have the plot and house construction trees bought with the help of GiveDirectly transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well to transform the living standards of people in our village. For example, as a single mother living on my parent's land, the transfers have made me a land owner.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After buying a quarter an acre of land with my first transfer, I also bought an additional one-eighth and half piece of land at KES 40,000 once I received my second transfer. This will not only be a farm but also a home for raising my three kids as a single mom. This is because I have been living on my father's land and fending for my kids alone. I have been working as a casual laborer on a white settler flower farm for the past two years. Our working hours are usually from 8 am to 3 pm with a pay rate of KES 1,400 a week. This income is majorly for household consumption and a small percentage on a school fees basis. For the rest of KES 15,000, I used to purchase house construction trees. This will aid in building my own house on my newly bought farm. As a result, I and my kids will have a home.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt really good when I received a message with the great news of the receipt of the first transfer. It was around 4:00 PM while I was seated just at the doorstep with my other household members taking four-o'clock tea. It was not a challenge confirming the source after seeing the pop-up of the name Segovia. It was all celebrations right after and since I had been in talks with my neighbor over the sale of one of his assets that I had a great interest in. I made all the payments three days later after an agreement with him over the asset.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since I received the first transfer, I have seen a lot of changes, with the biggest being the payment for a piece of land that I am now carrying on with my farming. This has brought a turnaround in my life, and it is the start of a great future for my children who have never had what they call their own. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for this generous support and hope that the second transfer will do a lot more.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a single mother of four, I had been living on my mother's land which was so small given that I have six other siblings sitting and dependent on the same piece of land with their children. I had no piece of land that I could call my own, but I am grateful that the visit by GiveDirectly to the village has drastically changed what I thought will never happen. I needed to pay a total of KES 50000 for a fifth of an acre but managed to get into an agreement of clearing the pending amount after the second transfer when I paid KES 40000. I have started farming on the piece as I make arrangements to construct a new house for my children once I accumulate enough amount. I also spent KES 6000 on school fees for my daughter who is currently in form one and spent the remaining on foodstuff and clothing for my family of five.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been desiring to one day own a piece of land for 3 years now but due financial constraints I have not. I do casual jobs in order to raise a family of 5 people single handedly. Weekly, I earn around KES 1,200 and this is to meet school fees for my 3 children in primary level plus their school neccessities and family basic needs. I am planing to purchase 1 acre piece of land worth KES 30,000 and use the rest in building a house. This will give me a stable mind since the one we have is small yet in our culture ladies are not entitled to inherit their fathers land.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last six months, my biggest joy is securing a casual job where I earn around KES 1,200 per week. In the last 2 months I secured this job though it is far from home, I am happy atleast I can put food in the table for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenges I am facing is my children lacking parental care. Though I have a small casual job to do in someone's farm but it is far from my home. We are supposed to wake up as early as 3Am and walk all to the way to his farm. I wish to get a humble time also to be with my children because sometimes I arrived late at round 10pm when I have my 2 year old children.
