How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new dream that I would wish to accomplish which is to own livestock like goats and cows. I believe that these are the long-term investment that one can talk about considering that they have numerous benefits. I however have the desire to have them so that once they increase in number, I can be able to pay fees for my children especially once they join colleges. Therefore having them would mean that I will not have to strain on raising the fees for all my children throughout their stay in school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a commendable job by ensuring that they visited every household without discriminating against anyone. Their mode of operation was very unique starting from the enrolment day, it was free and fair, also upon receiving the cash we were granted the freedom to choose what to purchase according to our desires. Therefore I do not think there is anything that has to be changed so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of my second transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, nails, timber, and all the labour costs. I purchased all these to construct a new house which will as well serve as my business premise. Initially, I rented from a friend and it was too costly. At times I would spend all the little profit that I earned from my retail shop business to clear the house rent. This made me not save even a coin and I could barely sustain all my family's needs. Also, I couldn't even host a visitor because of the size of the house. It has been so tough all along and I never imagined that all these problems can seize this soon. I am now living peacefully with my family of three without any hiccups like before. Also, I no longer pay rent like before, and whatever I earn is all mine. I can now comfortably pay all my bills on time and well as fend for my family's basic needs without struggling.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home baking some doughnuts which I sell at my local restaurant when I received a message. Upon checking it, I found out that I had received the transfers and I couldn't believe it at first. I excitedly called my husband who was seated outside and he confirmed that it was true. We were both overwhelmed with joy and we couldn't thank GiveDirectly enough as we were going to actualize our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The fact that my child now sleeps comfortably is something to celebrate at. I am looking forward to build my own shop once I receive the next transfer and I can't wait to stop paying rent and concentrate on expanding my business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been operating a local restaurant while my husband has been buying charcoal from the village and selling it far in a certain city. Both our efforts combined, we have been supporting each other to build our family and give our child the best that we could afford. Although we have been giving it our best to provide for our child, we have not been in a position to buy her a decent bed as she has been sleeping on a traditional bamboo bed with coconut leaves mat as the beddings which is not comfortable. When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to buy her a bed and mattress and build a temporary building which I can put up a shop so that I can move out the rental shop. I spend KES 10600 to buy my child a bed and a mattress, KES 4500 to buy a sack of maize which could take us for two months and saved the balance towards building a shop. I'm looking forward to spend my next transfer to finalize my project.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am in a polygamous marriage and of late I have been having some wrangles with the first wife. I got one child with my husband and I have been thinking of how best to avoid future wrangles on family inheritance, especially on land.
Receiving this money means using 30,000 KES to buy a piece of land so that my child can use it if wrangles emerge in future.
I will also use the remaining amount to buy a resistant dairy cow that will cater for family expenses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The coming of my sister's two children made me happy as I know during this holiday I have people who can help me in doing the family chores as I have ample time to run my business.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I own a kiosk that is growing at a tortoise speed as I do not have enough capital to boost it, this has been making me have sleepless nights as my competitors are always bringing huge stock and I feel soon I might be taken out of the industry.
