How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Had it not been this financial support from GiveDirectly, then it would have been difficult for me to support my child and sister on their school fees, which would have also been hard for them to continue with their studies without interruptions concerning school fees. Through the money, I cleared their fee arrears and now they are comfortable in school. The transfer has also been enabling me to pay my rent on time as well as catering for my household needs.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
So far I have saved some money in my bank account. I am hoping to open a business of selling second-hand clothes and other products in the next few months. This is the only additional goal that I now have which I am looking forward to achieving it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25000 of my most recent transfer on paying school fees for my child and for my sister who is in high school. She had been sent home to collect fees. They are all comfortably in school after clearing their fee arrears. In addition to this, I paid for my house rent expenses on time at KES 10000. On the remaining KES 15000, I saved it in my bank account. I am hoping to open a business of selling second-hand clothes and other products. Through this, I will be generating an income which will enable me to run my household as well as paying for my house rent.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently better after receiving the transfer. Earlier before receiving the transfer, My mother used to sponsor my child's education. I have a son who is in secondary school. She does tea plucking jobs which earn her little money but she used to spare some of it to pay my child's school fees. It usually broke my heart seeing her struggle to pay my own child's school fees since I had no financial capacity to do it. Getting the transfer has enabled me to pay for my child's school fees. This has eased the burden on my mother's and I am much happier. I have even supported her by paying my sister's school fees. It gives me joy that I can now stand on my own courtesy of the transfer.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am planning to open a second-hand clothes business. I have been doing casual jobs around the cleaning of other peoples clothes and houses. I earn approximately KES 3500 monthly. These earnings are little that they could not satisfy my needs and those of my family. I could not even get to extra to save towards starting my own business. After getting the transfers,I now have that aspiration to start a business dealing in second-hand clothes. The next transfer will go towards the same. Beginning this business for me would give certainty of a regular and reliable source of income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the KES 15000 of the transfers to pay my sisters school fees. I also used KES 5000 to pay for my child's school. Paid rent of KES 1500. I also spent KES 3000 to buy food items. The remaining KES 8000 went towards savings in my bank account. My sister had been out of school for a while due to school fees so I decided to spend most of the transfers to keep her in school.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I am planning to start a second-hand clothes business with my next transfer which will help me in the purchase of stock and renting a business premise. I would love to be self employed and quit my current job which is very demanding but pays quite less.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
When I received the money,I shopped for enough food stuff to last us a few weeks. This now means that my children can feed better even when my salary delays. Before the money came, delayed payments meant borrowing and even going hungry at times which has not been the case recently.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used part of my transfer to pay my rent, clear a debt I had borrowed from my table-banking group, buy foodstuff and saved the remaining amount. My plan was to start a business with part of that money, but that was not possible because after taking care of the most urgent needs, the remaining amount was not enough to purchase enough stock. For this reason,I decided to save it as I wait for the second transfer.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was expecting the message to come in the name of GD, but it did not, this surprised me a bit and I even thought that someone had sent me money by mistake.Soon after, another message from GD came which calmed me because I knew that the money was mine.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a 3 year child who fully depends on me and who has started school, I will spend the first bit of my transfers to pay for her school fees. Secondly, I will pay my rent with a portion of the transfer. Finally, I will invest the remaining of my transfer on a second hand clothes business. I feel comfortable with the second hand clothes business because I love fashion and I enjoy to dress myself and other people.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is physical violence especially when it is happening to me. This is because I never have it in me to fight back, and I always get some negative and helpless feelings whenever I become a victim of any form of physical violence. My second concern is failing to meet my daily needs such as a decent meal. This is a concern to me because I have a 3 year old daughter who fully depends on me. I would feel bad if I cannot provide for her some basic needs such as clothing and food. Thirdly, unemployment concerns me because in a case where I am unemployed, I would fail to meet my responsibilities of taking care of my daughter.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambitions are to own a large clothes boutique, or a chain of boutiques where I can stock and supply clothes for everyone including children.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
My day usually begins at 6:00am when I wake up and prepare to go to work at Eastleigh estate where I work as a domestic worker. My reporting time is 8:00am and my work involves assisting in house chores such as cleaning the house and doing laundry. I complete work at 3:00pm where I leave work to pick my 3 year old daughter from school. I then assist my daughter with homework before I prepare for her supper and get her ready for bed. In my free time, I enjoy listening to reggae music and playing and spending time with my daughter.
